Welcome to Rovinj – the most charming town on Istria’s west coast.
Picturesque lanes, ice-cream parlours in pastel colours, a church tower straight from an Italian storybook. Everything looks as though it came from a catalogue. Yet only a few kilometres to the north lies a place that has absolutely nothing in common with this postcard idyll.
A place that has circulated through forums for years, been recommended discreetly and become the strangest Croatian experience of their lives for many visitors.
Its unofficial name: Piggy Beach.
And what happens there is… let us put it this way: not suitable for minors.
Not an ordinary naturist beach
Its official name is Punta Križ.
It lies in the open bay before the Lim Channel, very close to the naturist campsite Valalta, which is better known for orderly, family-friendly naturism.
What happens on the wilder, unofficial section to the north, however, is in another league.
Piggy Beach is not a place for shy newcomers to naturism.
It is a kind of open-air swingers’ club without a doorman, a mixture of nature, naked skin and uninhibited physical communication.
What really happens there?
The short answer: Sex. In groups. Outdoors. In front of an audience.
The long answer:
• People meet here not to swim,
• not to read,
• and not for a romantic picnic either.
They come to display themselves. To watch. And to be watched.
What takes place in this rocky cove is a mixture of exhibitionism, voyeurism and spontaneous group dynamics, set in a Mediterranean landscape.
Some come to watch, others to participate – and some simply arrive by accident and immediately retreat.
Why “Piggy Beach”?
The name is not official, of course.
It comes from the locals – half amused, half annoyed.
It describes what can regularly be observed there: a kind of human wallow in which everyone does as they please – without regard for neighbours, time or spectators.
“People behave like animals there – but voluntarily.”

And yes – that is exactly what it is: wild, shameless and rather pink.
Who goes there?
The guest list is as colourful as Rovinj itself:
• Swinging couples in holiday mode
• Voyeuristic tourists with binoculars and sunscreen
• Exhibitionists who never pass up a stage
• Curious visitors who realised too late where they had ended up
Visitors come from across Europe. The atmosphere is relaxed – provided that everyone follows the unofficial code:
Looking is fine. Staring is not. Photographs? Absolutely forbidden.
Who is this beach unsuitable for?
Anyone who has no interest in such things:
• Families with children
• People who are easily embarrassed
• Anyone who thinks naturism means “freedom without physical contact with strangers”
Piggy Beach is not a place for peaceful relaxation or a conventional afternoon at the beach.
It is a place for people who let themselves go – and do so quite consistently.
Is it even legal?
Naturism does, in fact, have a long tradition in Croatia.
Naturism is widespread and socially accepted – but what happens at Piggy Beach is not officially permitted anywhere, although it is unofficially tolerated.
As long as nobody files a complaint, no minors are present and everything is consensual, the authorities – as so often happens – look the other way.
And Rovinj has other concerns during the summer anyway.
Conclusion: Croatia’s wildest stretch of coast?
Definitely.
Piggy Beach is not an insider’s tip for sun worshippers, but an open invitation to everyone interested in naked skin – in the most literal sense.
It is:
• an adventure for some,
• a nightmare for others,
• and an unbelievable anecdote for everyone who happened to walk past.
You do not have to visit it.
But if you do, you certainly will never forget it.
