The 5 speed traps now active on Krk & nearby – brand new and tricky

In Croatia, 2025 is not only about sea, sunshine and burek – it is also about speed.

Anyone driving in the Krk region – whether approaching from the mainland across the bridge or travelling around the island – should know one thing: There are new speed cameras. Not familiar old ones, but completely new models installed only in recent weeks.

We have documented the five newest speed traps that are now triggering regularly. All have been installed since January 2025 – the first one only a few days ago.

👉 Including GPS coordinates, direction of travel, limit – and an honest assessment of what makes each one so tricky.

📍 1. Junction by Plodine – island of Krk

Coordinates: 45.13530° N, 14.54612° E
Limit: 60 km/h
Direction measured: both directions

⚠️ Why this speed camera is tricky:

This system stands on the island of Krk, clearly visible at the large junction between Krk, Malinska and the road onwards towards Cres/Lošinj – directly beside the Plodine supermarket.

  • The area is busy and confusing.
  • Many drivers arrive from the expressway at 90 km/h, are in “summer mode” and no longer take the 60 signs seriously.
  • The camera is brand new – not even a week old – and measures both directions.

👉 Anyone travelling even slightly too fast is caught head-on.

📍 2. After the Krk Bridge – towards Krk town

Coordinates: 45.24010° N, 14.55994° E
Limit: 90 km/h
Direction measured: both directions

⚠️ Why this speed camera is tricky:

  • Many people think they are still in a 60 zone – in reality, the limit is already 90 km/h.
  • The camera is mounted on a large digital sign above the road – visible, but easily mistaken for an information display.
  • The danger: anyone accelerating from 60 to 90 and pressing the throttle too eagerly enters the measuring zone.

👉 The classic mistake: “Now I can put my foot down” – unfortunately, right in the trap.

📍 3. Expressway near Bakar – towards Krk

Coordinates: 45.27014° N, 14.60335° E
Limit: 80 km/h
Direction measured: Rijeka → Krk only

⚠️ Why this speed camera is tricky:

  • You arrive from a section with a 100 km/h limit.
  • The camera stands directly after the 80 sign on a bend – without warning.
  • Whether it triggers at exactly 81 or only at 95 is unclear – but one thing is certain: it is actively operating.

👉 If you do not actively brake before the bend, you have lost.

📍 4. Before the Kukuljanovo exit – towards Rijeka

Coordinates: 45.31133° N, 14.54122° E
Limit: 100 km/h
Direction measured: Krk → Rijeka only

⚠️ Why this speed camera is tricky:

  • The location is on a downhill section, shortly before the exit to Bauhaus (Bakar/Kukuljanovo).
  • Many drivers easily drift above 110 without noticing.
  • The camera is mounted on an overhead gantry with a display – clearly visible, but often recognised too late.

👉 Drivers thinking “I’m almost in Rijeka” are often caught here.

📍 5. Škurinje entrance – towards Slovenia

Coordinates: 45.33624° N, 14.44353° E
Limit: 70 km/h
Direction measured: Rijeka → Slovenia only

⚠️ Why this speed camera is tricky:

  • It stands directly after the 70 sign before the “Škurinje 2000 m” entrance.
  • The road looks like an urban motorway – nobody expects 70.
  • The camera is permanently mounted on a digital display – in full view, but without mercy.

👉 Anyone rolling in at 100 has already lost – and yes, many do.

🚦 What you need to know:

🧠 These five speed cameras are:

  • newly installed or modernised between January and April 2025
  • fixed, not mobile checkpoints
  • active, often with dual cameras for both directions
  • technically state of the art – probably with number-plate recognition and motion analysis

🎯 And how precisely do they measure?

Many local people and holidaymakers report: Speedometer +10 km/h generally seems to be tolerated. So anyone driving, for example, 70 where only 60 is permitted will generally escape a fine – provided those are speedometer readings, since actual speed is often lower.

🚫 But beware: Serious speeding, meaning 20+ km/h over the limit, is consistently penalised – and can become very expensive. The fun stops when you push it too far.

💡 Are radar detectors permitted?

No. In Croatia, radar detectors are strictly prohibited. This applies to:

  • traditional hardware devices
  • radar warnings in a satnav
  • apps with active live warnings

➡️ Google Maps is permitted when it displays only fixed cameras.
➡️ Waze is tolerated, but legally a grey area.
➡️ A blog such as this one is legal because it provides static information, not a real-time warning.

📱 For anyone who wants to play it safe:

multilingual fines app is now available for iPhone, iPad and Mac, covering common traffic offences throughout the EU – including Croatia.

Whether it is speeding, using a phone, parking rules or alcohol limits, you can see at a glance what to expect and where – without advertising or gimmicks.

🧭 Conclusion: Welcome to the new radar reality

Anyone driving to Krk in 2025 should know: speed cameras no longer lurk only in towns. They stand:

  • on expressways
  • on signs above the road
  • in strategically perfect locations

They often measure:

  • in both directions
  • at transitions from 90 to 60
  • at psychologically well-chosen moments (after bends, before junctions)
