The scheduled crossing from Mrtvaška takes about ten minutes. After that, the return sailing, water and sturdy shoes matter: the village, coves and roughly 16 kilometres of karst paths await on this inhabited island.
A day trip begins with the last return sailing
Ilovik is small enough for a manageable island day, but not for a trip without a timetable. Visitors arriving via the southern tip of Lošinj should first check the last suitable departure from Ilovik and only then plan a cove, walk and meal.
State line 311 connects Ilovik with Mrtvaška and Mali Lošinj. The timetable gives about ten minutes between Ilovik and Mrtvaška. Times and the number of sailings vary by weekday and season; in 2026 the timetable switches to low season on 28 September.
Line 311 and fast boats follow different patterns
The short crossing to Mrtvaška is the obvious route for guests staying on Lošinj. Fast lines 9141 and 9308 also call at Ilovik on certain days and connect the island with other places. They are not, however, an identical daily direct connection from Rijeka, Zadar or Mali Lošinj.
A freight sailing listed in the summer timetable was explicitly not a passenger service. This illustrates why not every line in a table is an opportunity to board. The valid operator timetable and a current operating check matter before departure.
Car-free means inhabited—not a museum
Ilovik is the southernmost inhabited island in the Lošinj archipelago. The 2021 census records 109 residents, 55 households and 173 dwellings. Visitors enter a real community, not a car-free stage opened only for day trippers.
The village contains the parish church of St Peter and Paul and the roughly twelve-metre-deep Studenac well. Gardens with oleander, roses, palms and other Mediterranean vegetation explain the nickname Island of Flowers; beyond the village, however, Ilovik remains a dry karst island.
One cove is enough for a short stay
Anyone with only a few hours can combine the village with one nearby cove and return to the landing with a generous buffer. Paths lead to Vela and Mala Draga, Parknu and other small stretches of coast.
Public information does not promise loungers, food service or permanently staffed lifeguard posts at every cove. Water, sun protection and sturdy shoes belong in the day pack even when a restaurant stop is planned.
Paržine and Sućadrija make the longer circuit
For a full day, the route towards Paržine, Parknu and Did is suitable. At 96 metres, Did is no high mountain, but it offers broad views across Ilovik, Sveti Petar, the southern tip of Lošinj and Mrtvaška Bay.
Near Sućadrija are remains of the early Christian Church of St Andrew. The walk can be combined with coastal sections. The officially presented path network totals about 16 kilometres; that does not mean every circuit fits a short shore visit.
Karst, heat and the bora change every walking time
Many paths consist of gravel and uneven karst. Sturdy shoes are more comfortable than smooth beach sandals, shade is not available everywhere, and a low climb feels longer in midday heat than it looks on a map.
Services can change or stop in the bora, thunderstorms or heavy seas. Times on walking maps remain estimates. A swim, heat and a missed turning all need to fit within the return-sailing buffer.
Self-sufficiency is wise outside high season
There are no reliably year-round opening hours for restaurants, the shop or other services. Especially after the summer timetable changes, nobody should assume that food, drinking water or every desired service can always be bought.
That does not mean the island is closed. It means a small inhabited place follows its own rhythm. A full bottle, a snack and a charged phone make the trip independent of unplanned openings.
Three plans suit three lengths of stay
For a short visit, the village, church, Studenac and one nearby cove are enough. A full day permits a larger circuit via Paržine or Sućadrija. Anyone wanting several coves without watching the clock should plan an overnight stay and book it in advance.
The simple order is always the same: secure the return, check weather and operations, and choose a route that suits the time ashore. That is how a ten-minute crossing does not become ten minutes of carelessness.
