An October evening walk needs a different plan
People in Medulin, Premantura and nearby settlements should check more than the weather forecast in October. A municipal notice published on 30 September announces hunting on land outside regular hunting grounds. Several settlement edges, approaches and areas by campsites are included—places often used for short dog walks and spontaneous strolls between houses, scrub and open paths.
For 5 through 18 October 2026, the notice gives a daily window from 7:30 pm to midnight. This is an announced operational period, not a statement that shots will be fired in every listed area every evening. Conversely, a path seeming quiet at first does not prove nothing will take place there that evening.
Medulin, Pješčana Uvala and Vinkuran
For Medulin, the list includes entrances from Pula and Ližnjan, the direction of Kažela, and Mukalba, Vrčevan, Sv. Petar, Smrikve, Medulinska lokva, Paulini, Cintinera and Krase. We retain the local names so they can be checked against the Croatian notice and signs. They are not boundaries surveyed by us.
In Pješčana Uvala, the municipality names the access by Cave Romane and Soline. For Vinkuran it lists Cota, Valbonaša and the directions of Vinkuranska vala and Cava Romana. Visitors staying nearby should clarify the exact route of an evening walk locally; the place name alone does not define a safe alternative.
Banjole, Vintijan and Premantura
Around Banjole and Volme, the notice names settlement surroundings, Camp Indije, Kaštanjež, Bumbište and Kamik, together with the area around Vintijan. In Premantura it lists Rupina towards the Kamenjak entrance, Tašalera, the cemetery, Funtana and the surroundings of Stupice and Brig.
Naming the area around a campsite does not mean the whole campsite is closed. Nor does a reference to the Kamenjak entrance direction create a general ban for the protected area. Current instructions from the responsible authorities govern specific access and closures. Precision helps; an invented blanket closure misleads.
A separate date on Saturday, 24 October
A group hunt is also announced for Saturday, 24 October, from 7:30 am to noon. The municipality names the area by the cemetery or entrance to Premantura and the edge of Volme towards Monte Copama. This morning date is separate from the evening operations.
Anyone marking only 5–18 October would miss the second part. For trips on 24 October, exclude the named edge areas from your route during the announced window and check for last-minute local changes.
Why the municipality announces these operations
The basis is the municipal wildlife-protection programme for land outside hunting grounds, running from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2032. The notice specifically describes wild boar as a problem near settlements; the aim is to reduce wildlife numbers and limit disturbance or damage. Dates were coordinated with the Istra hunting association.
That explains the unusually settlement-focused notice. It is neither a licence for arbitrary hunting nor an invitation for visitors to drive animals away themselves. The responsible body must answer whether a specific property or path lies in a particular operational plan.
What visitors and residents can do
Plan walks in the named edge areas outside the announced windows where possible. Keep dogs on leads and respect barriers and instructions. Tell companions who may set out only for a short walk. Accommodation providers may help with local orientation, but binding information on plans and changes comes from the municipality or those responsible for the operation.
