Viška or komiška pogača? On 11 October, family recipes from both island towns come together. The public afternoon in Vis is a separate event from the morning workshop for island chefs and restaurateurs.
The afternoon belongs to the island's recipes
On Sunday, 11 October, 'Otok s dva lica, pogača s dva okusa' in Vis combines a tasting with an island-products market. The tourist board gives the time as 15:00–17:00 on Trg 30. svibnja 1992 outside the city administration. Residents of Vis, Komiža and the other island villages are invited to enter the competition.
A jury comprising chef Dino Šeparović and one local representative from each town is to choose two winners: one viška and one komiška pogača. The winners are then to represent the island alongside the tourist boards at Advent in Split. The invitation does not yet contain a complete programme for that later appearance.
For visitors, Sunday afternoon is above all a chance to experience different versions side by side rather than merely read a dish's name on a menu. Our tip: ask about the family recipe and what the person baking it considers indispensable. These differences make a visit more interesting than a search for a single winning taste.
The familiar difference is in the filling
Here, pogača means a savoury filled bread pie. Komiža's local gastronomy page describes salted fish, onions and herbs as defining ingredients. Komiška pogača also contains tomato; the viška version is described as having none.
This is a useful starting point, but not a complete recipe. It does not automatically specify the dough, quantities or preparation of the filling. When tasting both versions, pay attention to the balance of bread and filling, moistness and saltiness. This compares the particular pie, not an entire town.
Fish is also a good reason to ask about intolerances. A general description cannot provide an ingredient or allergen list for every stall. Ask what is in the actual piece being offered; do not rely solely on the variety's name.
Chefs and students work together in the morning
A separate workshop takes place at Srednja škola Vis from 10:00 to 13:00. According to the tourist board, it is intended for chefs and restaurateurs from across the island. Dino Šeparović and the school's students are involved. This announcement is therefore not an invitation to a tourist cooking class open to anyone.
The focus is on comparing local recipes, gastronomic experience and jointly developing a three- to four-course tasting menu. The recipe basis is explicitly intended as an open draft. Participants' feedback is to be incorporated, not replaced by an already fixed standard version.
The official website gives info@vis-tourism.com for workshop registration. It requests a name, business where applicable, and contact details. Anyone wishing to attend should send their enquiry there and obtain confirmation. The published time alone does not reserve a place.
What still needs to be clarified directly for the competition
The competition invitation leaves one practical detail unresolved: a contact placeholder remains at the intended registration point. We therefore do not link to a supposedly working registration channel. Ingredient packs are to be available for collection at either tourist board; submission details and the required quantity will be supplied after registration.
The general address info@vis-tourism.com, published on the official Vis website, can be used for enquiries. It is not, however, equivalent to a confirmed competition registration. We cannot reliably state a registration deadline or admission price from the invitation.
Both events form part of the 'Pogača s dva lica' project. It collects local recipes and prepares a specification for both varieties. This does not mean a protected designation has already been awarded. The ongoing work is precisely what is interesting: family knowledge is collected, discussed and passed to a new generation of chefs.
For a visit from elsewhere, secure your return journey first
If you are already on Vis, the public afternoon is a clearly defined destination. For a specially planned island trip, however, two event hours are not a travel plan. Arrange outward and return travel, and accommodation if necessary, independently of the festival programme.
Our ferry notices linked below describe current changes but do not replace confirmation of your specific service. Particularly important: an additional sailing announced for another day or to another island does not automatically help with the return journey after the Pogača festival.
