Two hands, a predicted total and a surprising amount of passion: in Kali, Mura is part of everyday social life. A look at the finger game reveals how a tradition lives on across generations.
An encounter you hear before you see
Numbers shouted aloud, hands thrust forward and an opponent who does not want to be easy to read: Mura needs little equipment but plenty of attention. HRT followed the game in Kali in a dedicated report on 9 May 2026. Its cameras found a tradition that also involves young adults, in squares, in bars and at everyday gatherings.
One of the players featured, Rosano Franov Hljibar, then aged 18, had won the local competition held earlier, according to the report. He started in his eighth year of school. Older players and tournaments before carnival season encouraged him to join in. It tells a story of how a tradition is passed on: you watch others, develop a taste for competition and eventually become part of the group.
What the hands have to do with the numbers
HRT describes the basic principle of the related Dalmatian game Šijavica in a report from Pakoštane: opponents simultaneously show fingers on one hand and call out a predicted combined total. Whoever correctly predicts the total number of fingers shown scores a point. There, it is played by two or four people; the numbers called range from two to ten.
A simple example: one person shows two fingers and the other three. The correct total is five. Calling simultaneously is what matters; adding them up afterwards would be a different task. Always showing the same number makes you easier to predict. Alongside quick perception, reading your opponent therefore comes into play.
This description explains the basics, but it is not a binding tournament rulebook for Kali. Before joining in, it is worth asking about the target score, how pairs are formed and the number calls used locally. Regional names and customs should not be flattened into a single set of rules.
The competition continues beyond a single game
HRT's conversations in Kali also reveal the social side: a win provides material for later teasing. For the players featured, the volume is part of the fun, although not everyone in the neighbourhood shares their enthusiasm. One player explicitly recounts being asked to be quieter.
For visitors, that is a useful distinction. Lively calls can be hard to interpret from the outside; equally, invoking tradition does not make every level of noise appropriate. Watch first, wait for a quiet break to ask questions and let yourself be invited. That way, watching can become an encounter without turning the players into a performance.
Kali has a voice of its own
Kali lies on Ugljan between Preko and Kukljica. The local tourist board describes fishing as a defining economic and cultural tradition. It also highlights kualjski govor, a local form of Chakavian speech used in everyday life by older and younger residents alike.
That makes the village interesting beyond a visit to the beach. Its harbour, language and social games offer different ways to get to know it. Anyone wishing to explore further can discover the linguistic side in our article on the protected dialect. Mura adds a practice that does not have to be encountered behind glass.
Watching is a good start
You do not need a competition on your travel calendar to visit. Allow time for a walk and a break in the village; whether a game is under way is something to discover when you arrive. Ask participants before taking photos or videos, keep paths and tables clear and do not interrupt a game for an explanation. If invited to join, it is best to start without stakes and have the game demonstrated slowly.
This portrait was prompted by renewed interest in the game. The underlying HRT reports date from May 2026 and May 2025 respectively. They do not imply an announced October tournament or a guaranteed demonstration. As an everyday cultural practice, Mura needs no invented event date to be worth a story.
