Sounds like a fairy tale? Yet it is an everyday reality. While prices in Germany regularly reach the 2-euro mark, diesel in Croatia currently costs around €1,33 per litre – entirely legally, entirely normally and with no fuel-price lottery.
We have the proof:
🗲 A fuel receipt dated 3 April 2025 – 20,00 l of diesel for €26,60.
And yes, we had to click “recalculate” twice, because it is hard to believe.
⛽ Croatia 2025: How much do diesel and petrol cost?
Prices vary slightly by region and supplier – but broadly speaking:

Compare that with German petrol stations around Easter – €1,79 for diesel is not unusual. In Switzerland? Sometimes €2,00+.
🚚 Why is fuel cheaper in Croatia?
Quite simply:
- Lower taxes & duties
- The government regulates prices (maximum mark-ups)
- Domestic refineries + imports from the Balkan region
- Competitive pressure from foreign suppliers (for example Lukoil, Petrol, Crodux)
The Croatian government readjusts prices every two weeks – the public is currently benefiting noticeably. Holidaymakers are pleased as well.
😤 A little kick in the fuel tank for Germans
You drive your German diesel estate car 1.100 km down to the Adriatic – and at every German motorway service station you wonder:
“Why does filling the tank cost €112 when it could cost 70?”
Then you arrive here and, just like that, filling up becomes part of the holiday experience again.
