Karlovac's freshwater aquarium celebrates its anniversary in 2026 and reports a new award. Yet a good visit also depends on the small details: the right family ticket, shorter winter opening hours and time to explore the world of rivers at a relaxed pace.
An anniversary with something new to celebrate
Croatia's aquatic world does not end at the beach. In Karlovac, Aquatika has been focusing on rivers and their inhabitants since 2016. Its tenth year brings a fresh announcement: on 8 October, the institution reported receiving a T365 Excellence Award 2026 in the Best Practice Award category. According to its own account, the award recognises its contribution to year-round tourism — it is not a worldwide ranking of the best aquariums.
Visitors themselves are part of the anniversary, too. Announced on 21 September, the exhibition “Knjiga dojmova” in Caffe Bar Aquatika draws on guest books from the years since opening, featuring drawings, praise and criticism. The announcement gives no firm closing date; anyone travelling specifically for it should ask about the current display beforehand.
Why the river tells the story here
Aquatika stands on the right bank of the Korana. The building, integrated into the landscape, takes visitors through an exhibition that follows the course of a karst river. It explores habitats, plants and animals, as well as geology and the culture of the river regions around Karlovac. That makes it particularly interesting if you have mainly associated Croatia with the sea and islands until now.
Our suggestion for families: do not rush to tick off every tank. Choose a few things to observe — where does a fish spend its time, how does it use the current, where does it find shelter? Looking through the glass can then offer a small shift in perspective. An aquarium cannot replace a living river, but it can spark curiosity about one.
What an October visit costs
The price list checked on 11 October gives admission as 12 euros for adults and 7 euros for children aged 3 to 14. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children aged up to 14 costs 24 euros. For two adults and a ten-year-old child, for example, that is 7 euros less than three corresponding individual tickets. Workshops and guided tours are separate offerings, not automatically included in the family price.
Up to and including 31 October, the aquarium's regular opening hours are 09 to 19 every day; from 1 November to 31 March, they are 09 to 17. It is closed on Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. On Holy Saturday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, it closes early at 14. The café has its own opening hours.
Pushchairs, wheelchairs and a little consideration
The operator lists step-free access, a lift, an accessible toilet and designated parking for people with disabilities. If you need particular assistance, it is still worth making a quick enquiry before travelling. The address is Branka Čavlovića Čavleka 1a in Karlovac; Aquatika can be reached on +385 47 659 112.
In the exhibition area, do not tap on the glass or feed the animals, and take photographs without flash. Food and drinks stay outside. Pets are generally not permitted; the explicitly stated exception for assistance and guide dogs is part of the accessibility provisions. If you go to the Korana afterwards, treat the river as a separate destination — visiting the aquarium tells you nothing about whether swimming is currently permitted.
