Near Perušić, the park combines Samograd show cave with educational trails and an interpretation centre. Tours run daily in October. Until 15 November, there is also a special offer for holders of valid Croatian library cards.

A planned stop in Lika

Grabovača near Perušić lends itself to an outing where not everything has to happen at once. Samograd cave is the fixed point in the day; woodland paths, views and the interpretation centre can fit around it. Treating the visit as a spontaneous short break on the drive to the coast, however, risks arriving between tours.

On 16 October, the park presented its autumn attractions: educational trails, the Ploče viewpoint, the little Hobbit house in the plant garden and the interpretation centre. These complement the cave; they are not a suggestion to cover every trail in one afternoon.

02

Samograd can only be visited on a guided tour

The official visitor page lists daily tour departures in October 2026 at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30. The tour takes approximately one hour. According to the park, individual visitors do not need to book ahead; groups of ten or more should give three days' notice.

The programme is already reduced in November: Wednesday to Sunday at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00; the park is closed on 1 and 2 November. This distinction matters if an autumn idea only becomes a firm travel plan later. Check the current visitor schedule again before setting off.

The free offer has a clear condition

From 15 October to 15 November 2026, individual visitors presenting a valid membership card from a public library in Croatia can explore the park free of charge, including the Samograd visit described. The promotion marks Croatian Book Month and is organised with the library of the Municipality of Perušić.

The announcement does not list German, Austrian or Swiss library cards as proof of eligibility. Nor does the offer mean free admission for every group. Anyone without a qualifying card should consult the current standard prices. The promotion does not extend opening hours or override closure days.

04

Steps are part of the experience—and the decision

Access leads down into a sinkhole via steps with a handrail; inside the cave are old stairways cut into the rock. Shoes with a good grip and clothing suited to the cool surroundings are therefore sensible. Anyone who struggles with steps should check suitability directly with the park beforehand, rather than expecting a level underground walk.

Samograd is the cave area developed for tourist visits. Other caves and karst openings in the protected area are explicitly not open to independent exploration. Pets are not allowed in the show cave. Afterwards, the day can continue outdoors according to fitness and weather—for example, along part of the educational trails rather than on a second long hike.
