The vegetation fire from the Bosnia and Herzegovina border area continued to occupy emergency crews above Duba Konavoska on Wednesday. According to the responsible fire commander, the fire was far from homes – but that did not mean the operation was over.
The reliable position on Wednesday morning
The forest and vegetation fire in the border area above Konavle remained active on 26 August 2026. At 09:02, HRT reported around 40 firefighters deployed, citing Dubrovnik-Neretva County fire commander Stjepan Simović. According to him, the fire was far from inhabited houses.
That timestamp belongs to the news. An active fire can change within hours; Golden Beach therefore does not add a later ‘under control’ or all-clear to the report. Newer information from the fire service, civil protection and traffic authorities is decisive for travel today.
The fire crossed mountain ridges, not a border checkpoint
The operational situation developed in difficult-to-reach karst terrain along the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Authorities had already reported on 25 August that two arms of the fire had spread from the neighbouring country into the area above Stravča and Duba Konavoska. Administrative borders are invisible in this landscape; vegetation, wind and continuous slopes do not end there.
For firefighters, this means that a line on Croatian territory does not describe the entire fire complex. New smoke or flames on a neighbouring ridge can prolong the operation again even if individual sections had previously appeared calmer.
Why terrain determines the ground operation
Limestone, steep slopes, low vegetation and few passable tracks limit where vehicles and hoses can be used. Firefighters must secure access, work from reachable points and at the same time avoid being cut off by a shifting front.
A firefighting aircraft can drop water on hard-to-reach sections, but it does not replace the work on the ground. Crews check edges, watch hotspots and protect access routes. The authorities did not publish in detail which specific tactic was used on each slope.
From 21 to 26 August: an operation in stages
Croatia's fire service documented monitoring of the border-area fire from the evening of 21 August. According to the national fire association, 38 firefighters with ten vehicles and two Canadair CL-415 aircraft were deployed on 25 August. The following morning, the regional commander spoke of around 40 personnel and a situation that remained active.
The figures relate to different times and must not be added together. They show continued operational readiness, not a total count of everyone involved since the beginning. The possible renewed request for two Canadairs on Wednesday was also an operational plan in the morning, not evidence that both later flew.
Far from houses matters – but it is not a final report
Simović's statement that the fire was far from houses limits the immediate risk to settlements at the reported moment. It means neither that the fire had been extinguished nor that smoke, aircraft movements or local emergency routes had no impact.
The current reports reviewed mention no evacuation, destroyed homes or general tourist closure for Konavle. Golden Beach likewise does not infer that every side road is freely accessible. Fire-service access routes and local orders take priority even when no broader travel warning exists.
What firefighting aircraft can do – and what remains open
Canadair CL-415 aircraft can scoop water in quick succession and drop it on remote sections of a fire. In rugged terrain they buy time and reduce intensity so ground crews can continue working at critical points. Wind, visibility, topography and other air traffic nevertheless determine each deployment.
No final burned area, confirmed cause or end date for the operation has been published. Visible smoke alone also cannot show, without operational information, whether a front is growing, a treated area is still smouldering or a distant section is affected.

A border divides responsibilities, not vegetation
How to read an ongoing fire report correctly
For a dynamic fire, source, time and spatial context matter together. A morning report is a reliable snapshot, but not a promise for the evening. Travellers should check current notices from Hrvatska vatrogasna zajednica, Croatia's civil protection service and, where relevant, HAK.
Anyone who notices fresh smoke or flames should call 112 and describe the location, viewing direction and visible development as precisely as possible. Driving to a viewpoint near the operation, flying drones or sharing old images as the current situation is not helpful.
The interim assessment remains deliberately time-limited
A cross-border fire complex in hard-to-reach terrain that remained active on Wednesday morning is documented. A Croatian operation lasting several days and support by firefighting aircraft the previous day are also documented. A current danger to homes, evacuations or an established cause are not documented.
As soon as the fire service publishes a newer status, this assessment must be supplemented. Until then, the case primarily explains why a national border divides the organisation of a vegetation-fire response but cannot physically stop the fire.
