Four individual days of annual leave can each create a four-day weekend. Other public holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday. This overview applies to Croatia’s calendar, not automatically to your workplace in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.

01

Four long weekends with one day of annual leave each

For a regular Monday-to-Friday working week, 2027 offers four particularly straightforward combinations: Corpus Christi on Thursday, 27 May, with leave on Friday, 28 May; Anti-Fascist Struggle Day on Tuesday, 22 June, with leave on Monday, 21 June; the public holiday on Thursday, 5 August, with leave on Friday, 6 August; and the remembrance public holiday on Thursday, 18 November, with leave on Friday, 19 November.

Each combination works out as four consecutive days off. This assumes that the weekend is already free and annual leave is approved for the bridging day. The calculation describes a planning option, not an additional statutory entitlement to leave or a promise for shift workers or seasonal staff.

02

January can offer five or six days off

In 2027, New Year’s Day falls on Friday and Epiphany on Wednesday. Taking leave on 4 and 5 January, with the working week described above, creates a break from 1 to 6 January: six calendar days. Alternatively, two days of leave on 7 and 8 January produce five days off from 6 to 10 January.

Without a bridging day, New Year’s Day, the Easter weekend with Easter Monday on 29 March, and All Saints’ Day on Monday, 1 November, each provide a three-day break for employees with Saturdays and Sundays off. Easter Sunday is on 28 March. For planning, church calendar dates should be distinguished from each country’s statutory public holiday rules.

Five fixed-date public holidays fall at the weekend

1 May and 25 December fall on Saturday in 2027. Statehood Day on 30 May, the Assumption on 15 August and St Stephen’s Day on 26 December fall on Sunday. For a Monday-to-Friday working week, these five fixed-date public holidays therefore do not provide an extra weekday off.

Croatia’s public holiday law does not move a holiday falling on Sunday to the following day. A commemorative day and a non-working public holiday are also different: the 2025 amendment introduced 3 May as a day commemorating children killed and lost during the Homeland War, not as another general non-working day.

What the calendar means for a trip to Croatia

If you work in Croatia, you can use these combinations as a basis for agreeing annual leave. If you are simply visiting, you first need to check the rules where you work. A Croatian public holiday does not automatically make a working day in Germany, Austria or Switzerland a day off. This overview does not determine school holidays either.

Before making a specific booking, take another look at the destination: opening hours of public offices, shops and excursion providers, as well as the timetable for a connection, need separate checks. A public holiday alone tells you neither that a particular shop will close nor that a ferry will be fully booked or accommodation cheaper. The opportunity to bridge days is visible in the calendar; whether the trip fits depends on the actual plan.
