Above Kvarner, a mountain day can be planned on different scales. Poklon Visitor Centre, the Stražica–Sapaćica circuit and the high-altitude Plas trail are three different options—with different time requirements.
A mountain day does not have to begin at the summit
Učka offers a change of perspective: away from the shore and into woodland, karst and mountain landscapes. Poklon is a sensible starting point. At around 930 metres, the visitor centre explains the protected area's nature, culture and history through a multimedia exhibition. Heading outdoors afterwards, you see the landscape with different questions in mind: which areas are woodland, which have been shaped by human use, and what changes with altitude?
The centre can be a destination in its own right or the start of a hike. Both are valid. For families, changeable weather or a short autumn day, choosing between the exhibition and a suitable circuit is often more useful than putting the Vojak summit on the list at any cost.
Two trails, two very different calculations
The Stražica–Sapaćica circuit starts near Poklon and runs for around 6.5 kilometres through beech woodland and mountain pastures. The park gives a duration of two to three hours and an easy-to-moderate difficulty. It is still a hike: footwear, weather and the fitness of the slowest person determine the pace.
At two kilometres, the Plas educational trail is shorter, but lies near the summit at approximately 1,300 metres. The park allows one to one and a half hours for the circuit. From Poklon, reaching the trailhead alone adds roughly an hour on foot, and the return also needs to be included. The road to Vojak is closed to cars. “Only two kilometres” would therefore be a misleading description of the whole outing.
October hours differ from summer hours
The current opening-hours page lists Poklon's October hours as 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 18:00 at weekends. The souvenir outlet on Vojak is announced as open only at weekends in October, from 9:00 to 18:00. An open exhibition and a staffed summit outlet are therefore not the same promise.
For the permanent exhibition, adult admission in October costs 10 euros; children aged 7 to 18 pay 5.50 euros. A family ticket for two adults and up to two children costs 23 euros; accompanied children under seven enter free on individual visits. The cheaper winter price band begins in November. These prices apply to the exhibition, not as a general admission charge for every hike.
Decide on the return before setting out
Our suggestion for a relaxed visit: first check the weather and daylight, then either combine Poklon with Stražica–Sapaćica or set aside a separate mountain day for the Plas/Vojak area. Warm clothing, water and shoes with a good grip belong in your kit even when the coastal weather is pleasant.
In fog, strong bura winds or uncertain terrain, reaching the summit is not an obligation. A shorter circuit is not a failed outing. Check the park's notices again before driving there; monthly hours and local conditions may change.
