The island of Krk has been a favourite with Croatia holidaymakers for decades – and rightly so. Sunshine, crystal-clear water, easy access and Mediterranean joie de vivre. Yet where there are many visitors, it is often crowded too. Anyone visiting the well-known beaches of Baška, Njivice or Malinska in summer knows there is no trace of peace and quiet.
But they do still exist: those little coves that do not appear in every Instagram feed. Places you do not find by chance – only if you go looking. Or know someone who knows them. And that is exactly what this article is about: genuine insider tips, hidden beaches and quiet coves on Krk.
Spoiler: this website was even named after one of these places. More on that later.
Why seek out hidden beaches at all?
Of course, the large beaches offer facilities, bars and sun loungers. But they also bring bustle, music, parking fees and crowds.
Hidden beaches, by contrast, offer:
- Peace and nature
- No crowds
- Often crystal-clear, clean water
- A genuine sense of discovery
The downside? You have to make an effort. Hike. Search. Or arrange a boat. But believe us: it is worth it.
1. Oprna Bay (near Stara Baška)
Oprna Bay is no longer a complete secret, but it is still a place many people never reach. The small cove lies below the road from Punat to Stara Baška and is barely visible from above.
Getting there: Park at the roadside (if you are lucky), then descend for around 10–15 minutes along a rocky path. Alternatively, arrive by boat or water taxi from Punat or Baška.
What awaits you:
- Fine pebbles
- Crystal-clear water
- No facilities at all – bring everything you need!
Our tip: Arrive early. The cove fills up in the afternoon – at least in July/August. And: bring water shoes!
2. Golden Bay (Goldstrand – accessible only by boat)
Now for the anecdote: this beach gave the website its name. “Golden Beach Tours” was named after Goldstrand between Punat and Stara Baška – a place that can only be reached from the water.
Why the name? The rocks around the cove shimmer almost golden in the afternoon sun – a play of colour you will not forget.
Getting there: By boat only. Either rent one yourself (for example in Punat or Krk) or book an organised excursion. Some skippers will also show you the small neighbouring coves.
What awaits you:
- Turquoise water
- Absolute peace
- No facilities
Extra: There are more tiny coves nearby, some accessible only by SUP. Those who search are rewarded.
3. Potovošće (near Vrbnik)
This cove is a little better known, but still comparatively quiet. It lies east of Vrbnik and can be reached by car, albeit along a narrow, winding road.
Getting there: Head east from Vrbnik, follow the small gravel road to the car park and then walk a short distance.
What awaits you:
- Fine pebbles
- Crystal-clear, calm water
- A small kiosk during the season
Ideal for: Families who like peace and quiet but do not want to leave the car behind.
4. Vela Luka (for explorers only)
Vela Luka lies south of Baška and is one of the island’s most remote beaches, especially on foot. There are two ways to get there:
- Hike: around 2,5 hours from Baška. Rocky and hot, but spectacularly scenic.
- Boat: Easier and faster – many excursion boats include Vela Luka.
What awaits you:
- A broad pebble cove with mountain views
- A small restaurant (seasonal)
- Peace, peace, peace
Tip: If you hike, start early (shade = 0).
5. Sveti Juraj Bay (between Pinezići and Krk town)
Hardly anyone knows this cove. It lies north of Krk town, somewhere among fields, dry-stone walls and small patches of woodland. The beach is a mixture of rocks and pebbles.
Getting there:
- Ideally by boat or kayak
- Alternatively by bicycle or on foot along forest tracks (Google Maps is only partly helpful)
What awaits you:
- Pure wild romance
- Complete seclusion
- No signal, no kiosk, no noise
Only for: People who enjoy their peace and respect nature.
Tips for visiting hidden beaches
1. Preparation is everything
- Bring enough water (2–3 litres per person)
- Snacks and rubbish bags are essential
- Do not forget sun protection (for children too!)
2. Shoes & equipment
- Water shoes where it is rocky
- Sturdy shoes for hikes
- Lightweight dry bags for boat trips
3. Respect these places
- No litter, loudspeakers or cigarette butts in the sand
- Leave the place as you would wish to find it
