Around 20,000 people live on Krk – more precisely, 19,916 were recorded in the 2021 census. The figure describes an inhabited island with many settlements and everyday journeys. It is not a guarantee of perfect living conditions.

01

An island, not just a holiday backdrop

If you experience Krk only between the beach and your holiday apartment, you see just one part of it. Behind the summer view is an island where people shop, work, look after children and organise journeys to services. That is less spectacular than a sunset, but more interesting than the promise that all everyday difficulties can be left behind here.

The population figure provides a reliable starting point. The state report on implementation of the Islands Act records 19,916 residents on Krk in the 2021 census. In 2011 there were 19,383. That is an increase of 533 people, or 2.75 percent. “Around 20,000” is a useful indication of scale; it is neither a new count from October 2026 nor an explanation of why individuals live here.

02

Krk town is not the whole island

Administratively, Krk comprises the town of Krk and the six municipalities of Baška, Dobrinj, Malinska-Dubašnica, Omišalj, Punat and Vrbnik. The town's development programme lists 68 settlements across the whole island. Someone saying “Krk” may therefore mean the island, the administrative town area or the settlement itself. This distinction is essential when considering everyday life at home.

Our practical recommendation is therefore to compare specific addresses and journeys, not just place names or sea views. Where will you run regular errands? How will you get around without a car? Which services do you actually need every week? An island-wide figure answers none of these questions for a particular street.

03

The bridge changes the starting point

Krk has a road connection to the mainland. The bridge toll was abolished on 15 June 2020, a step explicitly documented by the transport ministry. Access is therefore fundamentally different from an island where every car journey to the mainland depends on a ferry departure.

A bridge does not, however, mean weather-independent mobility. Current HAK traffic notices matter for the actual journey, especially in strong winds. Anyone planning a regular commute should therefore try the route at their own working hours rather than assuming an uneventful holiday drive represents every weekday.

04

Quality of life needs services and people

The town of Krk's programme for 2025 to 2029 describes further needs in childcare, health and social services, and municipal infrastructure. This concerns not only buildings but also staff and access to services. It also identifies further expansion of broadband infrastructure as a task.

The document is municipal planning for the town's administrative area, not a survey of every municipality or a list of currently available places. It therefore establishes neither an immediately available kindergarten place nor fast internet at every address. These are precisely the details to clarify directly with the relevant provider before a longer stay.

A realistic view does not diminish the island

An ordinary day helps you form your own judgement more than an advertising slogan: make the necessary journeys, ask about year-round opening hours and check the home under the conditions in which you will actually use it. If you intend to stay in winter, take heating and damp as seriously as the terrace and view. These are questions to check, not defects in particular accommodation established here.

Population growth over ten years also proves neither a digital-nomad boom nor universal satisfaction. A census counts people, not their reasons. Krk does not need to fulfil such claims to be a fascinating place to live: the island has settlements, connections and tasks that extend far beyond its role as a holiday destination. That is where a closer look begins.
