More than €673,000 will fund two mobile-library services through September 2029. Šibenik plans a book bus, while Drniš plans a smaller vehicle for the town and the municipalities of Ružić and Unešić. Stops and launch dates have not yet been set.
Infrastructure that does not look like a road
Reaching a library takes more than a library card. It requires a route, time and sometimes somebody to drive. Two projects in Šibenik-Knin County begin at that point: not every reader should have to travel to the library; part of the library will travel to them.
Funding contracts for institutions in Šibenik and Drniš were presented on 30 September. The county puts the combined support at €673,265.99. That is concrete financing news, but it does not yet establish an operating route with fixed village stops.
Šibenik is getting a book bus
The Juraj Šižgorić City Library's project is called “Knjiga je u điru”. It receives €380,907.61 and provides for a book bus, creation of the mobile service and 20 reading programmes. At least 264 people from the designated groups are to be reached by September 2029.
The project description names children and young people, older people and people with disabilities. The mobile library is therefore not a seasonal souvenir shop on wheels. It is intended to improve everyday access to books and cultural participation. The later timetable must show whether a particular village is on the first route.
Drniš is using a smaller vehicle
The Drniš Public Library receives €292,358.38 for “Knjiga svima – gradimo zajednicu čitanjem”. The plan is for a bibliokombi, a smaller book vehicle. The municipalities of Ružić and Unešić are partners and, together with the Drniš town area, form the announced service area.
Nine programmes are to reach at least 160 people from the target groups by September 2029. Both projects are financed 85 per cent by the European Social Fund Plus and 15 per cent by Croatia's state budget. A large bus is not automatically better than a smaller vehicle; accessible stops and a reliable rhythm will be decisive.
Why the timetable will matter more than the handover photograph
For future users, practical service begins only with further details: where will the vehicle stop, how often will it return, how will registration work, and can reserved books be brought along? Returns, renewals and contact options also need to form a clear offer.
These are our checks for the service launch, not benefits already promised. The funding notice contains no reliable route plan or first lending day. It would therefore be premature to recommend waiting in a particular village square on a particular morning.
A cultural story beyond the coastal scenery
Travellers see the county's coast, while the hinterland often enters holiday stories only as an excursion. A mobile library draws attention to people who live there all year. Cultural provision is not only festivals and protected façades, but also regular, reachable everyday services.
People living in the region longer term or connected through family should follow announcements from both libraries. For a short-term visitor, the project is chiefly a reason not to see the hinterland as empty space between sights. We will report on an actual launch once stops are published.
