Around 87,000 domestic overnight stays each put Vodice and Biograd na Moru at the top of the DZS analysis for August. These are guests resident in Croatia staying in commercial accommodation—not all Croatians and not every holiday stay.

01

A look at demand from within the country

Vodice and Biograd na Moru lead the DZS analysis of domestic overnight stays for August, published on 9 October. With a rounded 87,000 nights each, they rank ahead of Crikvenica, Šibenik and Mali Lošinj. Nationwide, 2,451,718 overnight stays by domestic guests were counted, 5.6 per cent more than in the same month of the previous year.

This ranking offers a different view of Croatia's season from an overall list covering all guests. It can help highlight places as destinations for travel within the country. It does not, however, tell us which destination is the most beautiful, cheapest or most popular with all residents.

02

Domestic refers to residence, not a passport

The distinction between domestic and foreign guests is based on residence. Eurostat's methodology assigns arrivals and overnight stays by country of residence. The statistics are therefore not a vote on national identity.

A simple hypothetical example makes the difference clear: a Croatian citizen resident in Germany and a German citizen resident in Croatia do not fall into the same group on a trip to Croatia merely because of their passports. For the category considered here, the country of residence is decisive.

The wording 'Where Croatians most like to holiday' would therefore go too far. More precisely, these places recorded particularly high numbers of commercial overnight stays by guests resident in Croatia during the month studied. That sounds less like promotional ranking language, but better reflects what the figures say.

03

Why 87,000 nights do not mean 87,000 people

An overnight stay is one guest's night in an accommodation establishment. An arrival is counted at check-in. These units, as described by Eurostat, are not interchangeable. Someone checking in several times on a touring holiday can generate several arrivals; adding them up does not produce a count of unique people.

As a purely numerical example, two people staying five nights each generate ten overnight stays. Five people staying two nights each do too. Both groups leave the same night count despite differing group sizes and lengths of stay. The example describes none of the places named; it illustrates the limits of the indicator.

Nor can an occupancy rate be inferred from the night count alone. For that, Eurostat relates overnight stays to the beds offered and their available days. A larger accommodation stock can make more nights possible without every individual property being more heavily occupied.

Some travel remains outside this table

For this publication, DZS processes eVisitor data statistically. The coverage is commercial accommodation. Non-commercial stays, such as staying free of charge with relatives or in one's own holiday property, are not included in this analysis. The phrase 'domestic holidays' must not conceal that limitation.

Demand in a region can therefore be broader than a single accommodation table reveals. Statements about all visits would require further data. Nor is there a survey here asking why guests chose a place: the ranking proves neither low prices, personal connections nor a particular quality of the offering.

Our September and nine-month review addresses a different time period again. Anyone comparing the two articles should first set the month and coverage side by side. A good comparison begins not with the larger number, but with the same definition.

05

An idea for choosing a destination, not a ready-made travel ranking

For your own trip, the list can be a reason to look at familiar coastal towns afresh. Do not choose from it solely by ranking position, however. Check specifically whether the accommodation, journey, desired surroundings and travel month suit you.

For accommodation providers, the more useful follow-up question is also more precise than 'Who leads?': how is your own demand distributed across the month, how long do guests stay and which services do they seek? National statistics provide the context. The answer for an individual business must come from its actual bookings.
