The City of Pag confirms that reconstruction of the sundial at Cape Škamica is complete. The project cost €10,672.25. The site is now part of Pag Outdoor's offering; the timepiece's exact age remains unknown.
The city's completion notice is now available
On 26 October, the City of Pag confirmed that reconstruction of the sundial at Cape Škamica was complete. The project began with an initiative by the Volim Vlašići association and was carried out jointly with the Municipality of Vrsi. Travej d.o.o. performed the work.
The city states a project cost of €10,672.25. The budget allocation of €10,700 previously listed in this article was a planning figure. A specialist condition assessment and archaeological investigation preceded the work, which was carried out under conservation supervision.
What the sundial may have been used for
The new city notice explicitly leaves the exact year of construction open. It suggests that the location on an important shipping corridor may indicate a role in helping seafarers and ships find their bearings. This is a specialist interpretation, not a surviving construction record.
Earlier municipal information suggested an origin in the late 19th century. Restoration does not turn that assumption into a confirmed date. The published information also leaves the identity of the original builder unresolved.
Two numeral systems on one stone
According to the current description, the restored design combines Roman numerals on the winter side with Arabic numerals on the summer side. This particular feature makes the object culturally and historically interesting.
The project’s technical documentation should explain how closely all present-day markings follow verified original traces. Until that documentation is fully public, the sundial remains a reconstructed monument with unanswered questions.
A footpath is part of the visit
The city places the sundial within the Pag Outdoor tourism offering. A footpath leads to it, with views of Velebit, Paški most and the islets of Veliki and Mali Sikavac mentioned. The completion notice gives no definitive route length or walking time. The older media figure of around four kilometres should therefore not be treated as the complete return distance without checking the specific route.
Establish your starting point and return route before setting off. Sturdy shoes, sufficient water and a check of the wind, temperature and remaining daylight all belong in the plan. On an exposed coastal route, a short distance alone is not enough to plan your time.
A monument, not a picnic table
The reconstruction makes the site legible again, but not available for any use. Do not climb on the structure, redraw its numerals or move stones from the dry-stone walls.
Visitors should take their rubbish away and keep to existing paths. That will prevent a successful rediscovery from becoming a new source of pressure on this quiet coastal landscape.
