Air China has linked Zagreb with Beijing three times a week since 4 September. The flight keeps the same flight number but stops for several hours in Bucharest, including EU entry formalities.
One route has linked China and Croatia since 4 September
Air China launched the Beijing–Bucharest–Zagreb route on 4 September 2026. Croatia’s transport ministry describes it as the first scheduled air link between Croatia and China. Flights are planned on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays using an Airbus A330-200.
For Zagreb, the published weekly pattern matters more than a single inaugural flight because it creates a connection travellers can plan around. Availability on a particular date, the actual aircraft and the fare still depend on the specific booking.
The timetable uses two flight numbers
Outbound CA913 is scheduled to leave Beijing at 00:30, reach Bucharest at 06:30, continue at 09:20 and arrive in Zagreb at 09:55. All times are local.
CA914 is scheduled to depart Zagreb at 11:55, reach Bucharest at 14:25, continue at 17:25 and arrive in Beijing at 08:05 the following day. Air China expressly notes that the timetable and aircraft may change.
Direct does not mean nonstop here
The flight number remains the same between Beijing and Zagreb, so the service can be described as a direct flight in booking terminology. It is not nonstop: the aircraft lands in Bucharest and remains there for several hours.
The distinction matters in practice. The full journey is longer than the time in the air, and the stop is not a brief loop over the Balkans. Travellers specifically seeking a nonstop flight will not find one in this service.
Bucharest is where the EU external border is crossed
Croatia’s foreign ministry describes a pause of about three hours in Bucharest, partly for European Union entry and exit formalities. Romania and Croatia are both in Schengen, but a journey to or from China crosses its external border.
Official notices do not explain for every fare whether passengers remain on board, how cabin bags are checked or whether checked baggage is transferred automatically to the final destination. Confirm these points in the booking or directly with Air China or the ticket issuer.
One flight number does not replace a document check
The journey requires a passport, compliance with entry rules and, where applicable, a visa. The process depends on nationality, residence status, direction and purpose of travel. An EU passport therefore does not follow the same procedure as every non-EU passport.
The European Entry/Exit System may also be relevant to affected third-country nationals at a Schengen external border. Do not rely on a general statement about transit; check the rules for the individual traveller and the entire itinerary.
Two hours in Zagreb is not a generous buffer
There are two hours between CA913’s scheduled arrival at 09:55 and CA914’s departure at 11:55. That is the aircraft’s ground time, not a connection promise for separately bought onward flights from Zagreb.
Anyone continuing by air, bus or hire car should allow for border processing, baggage reclaim and delays. With separate tickets, the traveller usually carries the missed-connection risk.
How to check the offer before buying
Compare total journey time, the Bucharest procedure, baggage rules and rebooking terms, not just the price. Check that both sectors appear under CA913 or CA914 in one booking and that the fare includes the bags you need.
Check flight status and document rules again shortly before travel. The new service is convenient because it avoids a flight-number change, but it removes neither border formalities nor responsibility for an onward connection.
