The Hydrographic Institute has published the current complete edition for the Croatian coast in English. It supplements nautical charts with ports, anchorages, hazards, weather and regulations --- but replaces neither corrections nor the current situation.
More than a translated list of ports
The Croatian Hydrographic Institute (HHI) has published the "Sailing Directions, Adriatic Pilot -- Croatian Coast, 2026 Edition" in English. According to HHI, it is the first English edition of the current complete work for the Croatian coast. This is especially relevant to international charter crews that previously had only limited access to key official explanations.
The pilot describes coastal sections, fairways, ports and anchorages, as well as meteorological and oceanographic characteristics, hazards, regulations and recommendations. It is not a private cruising guide but part of Croatia's official nautical publications.
What a pilot explains better than a chart
A nautical chart shows depths, buoys, lights, restricted areas and other spatial information. The pilot adds context that cannot sensibly be reduced to chart symbols: approaches, landmarks, local conditions, harbour layouts, sheltered or exposed positions and guidance for using an area.
Along a complex island coastline, safety comes from combining both. The chart mainly answers "where"; the pilot helps with "how" and "why". Both are limited by their data date. A description cannot anticipate a new construction site, closed breakwater or short-notice regatta.
Why English makes a real difference
English is the common working language aboard many charter boats. When crews can read an official note directly rather than relying only on symbols or machine translation, routes and harbour manoeuvres can be discussed together. This reduces misunderstandings about terminology, restrictions and nautical recommendations.
"Fully available for the first time" needs precision. HHI has offered partial English publications before. What is new is the English edition of the current complete work for the Croatian coast. This neither means that every other official document is automatically available in English nor makes older English volumes worthless; their geographical and temporal scope is simply different.
How the pilot belongs in voyage planning
Before a trip, the pilot provides the wider context: which coastal sections lie along the route, which ports can serve as alternatives and where approaches or local conditions are demanding. This creates a plan with fallback destinations. The official chart then checks depths, marks, distances and precise positions.
On the day of sailing, current weather and sea warnings, Notices to Mariners, harbour notices and instructions from authorities must be added. The pilot is therefore a stable knowledge layer between the chart and the current situation. Opening it for the first time in poor visibility means using its greatest advantage --- preparation --- too late.

Corrections are part of the publication
Official nautical information changes. Light characteristics, construction work, closures, depths and harbour facilities can be corrected. The edition must therefore be used with HHI corrections and current notices. A printed copy remains reliable only if its correction status is traceable.
For digital or printed working copies, crews should record which corrections have been incorporated. Charter guests can ask the base which official charts and publications aboard are current. A book sitting on a shelf does not prove that it has been kept up to date.
What the pilot explicitly does not replace
HHI itself describes its use together with official nautical charts and other official publications. A chartplotter, community app or private harbour review can additionally help, but does not have the same official role. Conversely, the book replaces neither safe navigation nor a proper lookout.
Weather judgement, local knowledge, appropriate qualifications and the skipper's decisions remain necessary. English makes complex information more accessible; it does not automatically make a difficult entrance easy. When reality differs from the plan, change the plan --- not the observation.
Where to find the edition
The official HHI catalogue lists the English edition with a May 2026 publication date and ISBN **978-953-6165-83-4**. HHI refers buyers to authorised distributors. An official preview gives an impression of its structure and contents but does not replace the complete publication.
Golden Beach deliberately does not quote a price because current retail prices and availability must be checked for each sales channel. When ordering, verify language, edition year and ISBN to avoid accidentally buying an older partial volume or the Croatian edition.
