Brown algae form a three-dimensional habitat
Large brown algae create structure, food, shelter and breeding grounds on rocky seabeds. That is why researchers refer to underwater forests.
The term is an ecological image, not a reference to trees. What matters is the complex community living among the algae.
The shallow northern Adriatic is under particular pressure
The Ruđer Bošković Institute reports declines especially in shallow parts of the northern Adriatic. Several pressures act there at the same time.
Marine heatwaves, sustained warming, wave action, grazing by sea urchins, anchoring, seabed damage and illegal fishing can weaken populations. No single cause explains every location.
Recreational divers were trained near Vrsar
Together with the Ugor-Vrsar diving club, researchers practised a standardised survey. Dominant macroalgae, sea urchins and fish are observed along line transects.
The method makes observations more comparable. A beautiful photograph alone cannot replace a defined route, depth and documentation.
The depth is often between one and ten metres
The habitats studied are often accessible in comparatively shallow water. That makes them visible, but also sensitive to warming, wave action and human use.
Shallow does not mean risk-free or open access. Diving requires appropriate training, equipment and compliance with local rules.
Citizen science complements professional research
Trained divers can be on site more often and report changes. This creates a denser picture between professional field campaigns.
They do not replace taxonomy, laboratory analysis or long-term scientific planning. Quality comes from coordinated protocols and review.
There is no open app call yet
The institute's notice describes a specific training course, not a generally available reporting platform for arbitrary sightings.

Observe without leaving a trace
Do not pull algae, move sea urchins or anchor in sensitive stands. Good buoyancy control prevents contact with the seabed.
