Firefighters declared the island fire contained at 13:30 on 16 October. The initial estimate puts the affected area at around 100 hectares. Securing the perimeter and extinguishing remaining hotspots did not end with that announcement.

The latest update supersedes the morning report

The fire on Jakljan was declared contained at 13:30 on Friday, 16 October. Dubrovnik's public fire service announced the development; DubrovnikNet reproduced its statement in full. The report gives an initial estimate of around 100 hectares of burnt vegetation.

Although no open flames had been reported that morning, the fire had not yet been declared contained. This later development supersedes the previous information in our article. It does not mean that the entire operation has ended or that every hotspot has been extinguished.

Work to secure the perimeter continues

HRT/HINA reported on Friday evening that 32 firefighters with three firefighting boats were continuing to secure the fire perimeter. Because of the difficult terrain, work was expected to continue through the night of 16–17 October to prevent the fire from flaring up again.

These numbers describe the published situation on Friday, not an independently confirmed crew strength on Saturday morning. This update is not based on any explicit announcement that the fire has been fully extinguished or the operation has ended.

03

Why firefighters remain cautious

HVZ records the outbreak at 13:53 on 13 October. The fire was initially under control that evening, but flared up again at around 01:00 on 14 October during strong bura winds. Reinforcements and firefighting aircraft were subsequently deployed.

This sequence shows why “under control”, “contained” and “extinguished” are not interchangeable in reports. The bura at that time explains part of the operation's course; it is not presented here as a current weather warning.

04

No reason to visit the fire site

For visitors and boat crews, containment does not amount to permission to land. Access routes, landing areas and firefighters' working areas must remain clear. Current instructions on the ground take precedence.

The report does not imply a blanket closure of all neighbouring islands either. Anyone planning to go ashore should check local notices and keep clear of the operational area.
