In 2007, twelve firefighters lost their lives after a deployment on Kornat. The anniversary became a national day of remembrance – and 700 cubic metres of island stone became an extraordinary memorial site.
The 30th of August commemorates a deployment of 2007
On August 30, 2007, 13 firefighters were taken to Kornat Island for a vegetation fire. Twelve of them died at the disaster site or in hospitals in the following days. Frane Lučić survived badly injured. Kornat tragedy is considered the greatest disaster in the history of Croatian firefighters in peacetime.
The anniversary is therefore more than a historical island history. It touches professional and voluntary fire brigades in Šibenik, Vodice and Tisno, the families of the deceased and an entire country that supports its forest fire defense every summer on people who move into dangerous terrain.
The twelve names belong at the heart of the remembrance
Dino Klarić, Ivica Crvelin, Ivan Marinović, Marko Stančić, Gabrijel Skočić, Hrvoje Strikoman, Ante Crvelin, Tomislav Crvelin, Marinko Knežević, Josip Lučić, Karlo Ševerdija and Ante Juričev Mikulin died in Kornat and later in the clinics. They came from the professional fire brigade Šibenik as well as the voluntary fire brigades Tisno and Vodice.
The names are not a dramaturgy for a disaster text. They explain why the memory remains personal to this day: behind every number is a family, a unit and a place where comrades continue to work. Golden Beach therefore deliberately dispenses with drastic images and speculations about the details of the fire course that have been controversial to this day.
Twelve dry-stone crosses became part of the landscape
In the spring of 2010 construction of twelve large crosses of dry island stone began on Kornat. According to the Croatian fire brigade, about 700 cubic meters of stone were installed. More than a thousand volunteers from all over Croatia participated; the plant was completed at the end of June.
The place of memory works precisely because it does not stand like a foreign monument on the island. Material, craftsmanship and barren surroundings belong together. The crosses mark the places of the deceased and make the distance between abstract anniversary and concrete terrain visible.

The anniversary became a national memorial day
Since 2008 fire brigades on August 30 organized remind of the dead of Kornat. For years this included on half-masted flags and at 15:25 clock for a minute activated sirens. Families, friends, firefighters and state representatives drive to the disaster site and lay wreaths down.
On October 11, 2024, the Croatian Parliament unanimously decided to declare August 30 as the day of commemoration of the fallen Croatian firemen. Thus, the day expressly includes not only the twelve Kornat victims, but all Croatian firemen who lost their lives during missions and organized assistance.
What is established for 2026 – and what is not yet known
The date of the legal commemoration is fixed: Sunday, August 30, 2026. The fire brigade community usually publishes the specific instruction for the form and time of the national honor shortly before. At the conclusion of this contribution, no official program for 2026 was available.
The siren time of 15:25 is a long-standing practice and was also arranged in 2025. It is declared here as a tradition, not as an anticipated deployment report for 2026. If you want to participate in a public celebration, check the messages of HVZ and the local fire brigades shortly before 30 August.
The place of remembrance is not a casual stop for excursions
The crosses are located in the open, uninhabited karst landscape of Veliki Kornat. There is no urban infrastructure, no shady museum tour and no reason to climb the stones or use them as a backdrop for staged holiday photos. The place demands the same restraint as a cemetery.
Those who reach the area as part of a permitted visit to the National Park will follow paths, weather, fire and parking rules as well as the instructions on site. A trip exclusively for the anniversary should not be planned without confirmed transport and official program. Respect begins by not making an adventure offer out of memory.
Why the day has space in a travel magazine
The Kornati are often described as an empty, beautiful island world. August 30th reminds us that this landscape is a working space, a protected area and a danger zone at the same time. Fire brigades defend people, houses, nature and infrastructure under conditions that are hardly visible from the excursion boat.
Croatia does not honour the fire on this day, but the service. Those who look at the country more closely do not therefore see the sirens as an alarm, provided the local fire brigade announces them to the memorial, but as a minute in which twelve names and many other deceased become publicly audible.
