Police attribute ten fires over two days to a joint plan. One car and 43 olive trees were confirmed destroyed, and four people are under suspicion. This is an investigation update, not a new fire alert.
What police are linking together
The Zadar Police Department suspects four people of setting fires at a total of ten locations in the Zadar area on 14 and 15 August 2026 following prior agreement. The locations named are Zadar, specifically Bili Brig, Zemunik Donji, Galovac, Donje Biljane, Zapužane, Zemunik, Zagrad, Lišane Tinjske, Škabrnja and Benkovac.
The wording matters: police have brought these fire sites together in one investigation and describe a common plan as an allegation. It has not yet been decided whether every individual act can be proved against the suspects, which person is linked to which fire, or how the case will ultimately be classified in law.
A tip from a member of the public led to the stopped vehicle
According to the official account, a member of the public reported suspicious observations on 15 August. Police officers subsequently stopped a vehicle after 20:00 in which the four people later accused were travelling. The tip is the publicly known starting point for the arrests, not automatically the complete evidence for all ten fire sites.
Subsequent searches and forensic work formed the basis of the criminal complaint. Police also mention seized mobile phones and weapons, but do not allege that the weapons were used in the fires. Because that find can easily create more drama than insight, it does not belong in the headline and does not change the core allegation concerning the fires.
These losses have been specifically confirmed
According to police, a parked vehicle burned out completely at Bili Brig in Zadar. Between Škabrnja and Zemunik Donji, 43 olive trees were damaged or destroyed by fire. Vegetation and land burned at other locations; firefighters and, during some operations, firefighting aircraft were deployed.
The total property damage was still under investigation when the police statement was published. It would therefore be wrong to turn the two specifically named losses into a final total for all ten locations. The statement also contains no information about injured people.

The ten place names are not a current hazard map
All the fires described by police had been extinguished. This article records an earlier stage of an investigation and does not report an active fire front. Anyone travelling today between Zadar, Benkovac or Škabrnja should therefore not infer road closures, evacuations or current smoke conditions from this list of locations.
Current warnings come from the fire service, Civil Protection, police, HAK and local authorities. An old fire site may remain closed or require damping-down work, but that requires a current notice. The criminal investigation and the operational hazard situation exist on two different timelines.
Do not confuse these fires with the later outbreaks south of Zadar
On 21 August, new vegetation fires near Benkovac and Turanj led to evacuations. That later situation is covered in a separate current report. The police statement on the ten fire sites from 14 and 15 August provides no confirmed connection to those later fires.
The fact that some place names are geographically close is not enough to establish a link. The cause of each fire is investigated separately. Combining different August fires into a single series goes beyond the publicly verified information and can distort both the investigation and information for travellers.
The procedural position after the arrests
After the criminal investigation was completed, the four suspects were handed over to a police custody officer. Police filed a criminal complaint with the Zadar public prosecutor's office and said the precise legal classification would be supplemented after further findings. HRT, citing HINA, later reported that pre-trial detention had been ordered for all four.
Pre-trial detention is not a conviction. It secures proceedings where statutory conditions have been assessed, but it does not answer the question of guilt. A police accusation also remains an allegation. Golden Beach therefore names neither the suspects nor their origin and attributes no motives that the authorities have not substantiated.
Why olive trees are more than a number
Forty-three burnt olive trees may look like a modest item in an incident report. For a farm, however, they represent years of lost growth, crop losses, care and possibly the replacement of old varieties. The final economic loss depends on the trees' age, condition, yield and ability to recover.
It is therefore plausible that the total loss remains open. Firefighting costs, vehicles, vegetation, private property and consequential damage cannot all be fully assessed at a glance. A sober report can describe these consequences without resorting to unconfirmed million-euro figures or dramatic motives.
What this report means in practice
For travellers, there is currently no special diversion and no reason to avoid the wider Zadar area. General fire precautions remain relevant: never throw cigarettes from a vehicle, do not light open fires when prohibited or in windy conditions, keep access clear for emergency vehicles and immediately report smoke or a fresh fire by calling 112.
The same principle applies to public discussion as to firefighting: report early, but do not speculate. According to police, a citizen's tip was important in this case. Publishing the names, photographs or locations of supposed perpetrators on social media, however, is no substitute for evidence or due process.
