The record is an amount of energy per hour
HOPS reported consumption of 3,400 megawatt-hours for hour 21 on 11 August. That is the energy drawn during the hourly interval, not an arbitrary instantaneous power reading.
The transmission-system operator reports 64,013 megawatt-hours for the entire day. The two figures describe different periods.
Rooftop solar changes the visible load profile
According to HOPS, Croatia has about 600 megawatts of photovoltaic capacity installed behind household and business meters. During the day, this generation directly covers part of demand.
It therefore does not appear in full as a draw from the transmission grid. Actual total consumption can be higher than the grid load that is visible.
A steep ramp emerges after sunset
Solar generation falls quickly in the evening while air conditioning, lighting, households and hospitality continue to need electricity. Grid demand then rises within a short period.
This combination explains why the record occurred not at the hottest point of the day, but at 9 pm.
Tourism is a factor, not the only cause
August brings large visitor numbers, occupied accommodation and high coastal demand. Heat, households, businesses and wider electrification also play a role.
The record therefore cannot be used to derive a simple figure for tourism's share. HOPS does not publish such a breakdown in this notice.
The grid must remain balanced every second
Operation requires more than enough power stations: generation and demand, reserves, lines, voltage and frequency all need to work together.
An hourly record is therefore primarily a planning and flexibility challenge, not automatically evidence of a near-blackout.
Solar helps—and creates new requirements
Photovoltaics reduce fossil-fuel demand and peaks during the day. As more systems operate behind meters, forecasting, storage, flexible demand and controllable generation become more important.
The evening record is not an argument against solar. It shows that expansion and system management need to be planned together.
What consumers can take from it
Where tariffs and daily routines allow, washing, water heating or charging can be shifted into sunny hours. That smooths the evening peak.
The record does not call for private alarm. Efficient consumption, realistic cooling and a look at possible flexible tariffs are useful responses.
