The warning applies to a clearly identified monitoring point
On 28 August 2026, Dubrovnik-Neretva County reported an abnormal sample from the Hotel Bellevue bathing-water monitoring point in Orebić. In the eighth sampling cycle, the faecal indicator Escherichia coli exceeded the permitted limit. The authority therefore recommends not swimming there until a new official notice is issued.
This location is crucial. The notice does not declare every beach in Orebić or the Pelješac coastline a problem area. Anyone looking for an alternative should choose another currently sampled point on the official bathing-water map rather than judging by appearance or distance alone.
What an elevated E. coli result means
E. coli is used in bathing-water monitoring as an indicator of possible faecal contamination. Exceeding the limit is therefore a health-relevant warning signal, but not a completed investigation into the cause. The sample does not automatically reveal whether sewage, a local fault, rain runoff, a boat or another source is responsible.
According to the county, the competent environmental and other inspectorates have been informed. Until there is a reliable investigation, it would be wrong to identify any particular business, building or person as the source.
Repeat samples will determine when the all-clear is given
The sea is now being sampled repeatedly until the contamination can be confirmed to have ended. A single follow-up sample may be important to the operational assessment, but the authority decides when to lift its recommendation officially. A clean result posted on social media does not replace that notice.

Clear water is not a laboratory result
Bacterial contamination cannot be identified reliably with the naked eye. Water can look transparent and still have an abnormal microbiological result; conversely, turbidity, seagrass or natural discolouration do not automatically prove faecal pollution.
Odour, foam and visible discharges can be reasons to stay out of the water regardless of the map and report an observation. The official classification, however, is based on standardised samples, laboratory results and the authority’s assessment.
How to find a reliable alternative
Croatia’s bathing-water map displays each monitoring point separately. Check the name, location, date of the most recent sample and current individual result. A good annual classification describes long-term quality, but does not override a current recommendation not to swim.
People travelling with children, older adults or anyone with a weakened immune system should follow a warning particularly strictly. If symptoms develop after accidental contact, medical advice is appropriate; the sample result alone cannot provide a remote diagnosis.
What visitors should do now
Do not enter the water at the identified monitoring point, follow signs on site and choose another officially unaffected location for a beach day. This applies even if other people continue swimming or the sea looks calm and clean.
Blanket warnings about all of Orebić, speculation about hotels and old screenshots shared without a date are not helpful. A tightly defined official warning protects people better when it is passed on with the same precision.
The next reliable update will come from the authority
The cause, duration and results of the repeat samples are currently unknown. No specific geographical spread beyond the monitoring point has been published either. These gaps should not be filled with assumptions.
The recommendation remains in force until the all-clear is given. Before every trip to the beach, reload the county website and bathing-water map, because a live status can change faster than an editorial article.
