From 5 September to 1 November, a free bus carrying bicycles runs at weekends and on public holidays. Only passengers with a reservation and a bicycle may use it.
What starts running on 5 September
The cross-border Parenzana Bike&Bus connects Trieste and Poreč from 5 September to 1 November 2026. The service runs at weekends and on public holidays and is free for cycle travellers. It is not an ordinary scheduled bus for a spontaneous city trip.
Only passengers travelling with a bicycle are carried. Reservations are required because passenger and bicycle spaces are limited. The confirmation should therefore be saved on a phone or packed as a printout before the tour.
The two fixed departures
In Trieste, the bus leaves at 14:00 from the bus station at Piazza Libertà 9. In Poreč, it departs at 18:00 from the bus station at Ulica Karla Huguesa 12. Anyone using the service as return transport should allow ample time between the cycling stage and loading.
For a cross-border journey, passengers still need identification and any travel documents required for their nationality. Free transport replaces neither the reservation confirmation nor personal responsibility for a roadworthy bicycle.
Why the service suits the Parenzana
The former narrow-gauge railway linked Trieste and Poreč across Istria. Today, a cycling and walking route about 123 kilometres long follows much of the old track, passing tunnels, viaducts and station remains. The bus makes tours easier when the start and finish are far apart.
It does not turn the full route into an easy day trip. Elevation, surface, breaks and timely arrival at the bus remain real planning factors. A shorter stage followed by transport can also be a sensible option.
The right bicycle matters more than the timetable
The official Parenzana website notes unpaved and rougher sections and recommends a mountain bike. A sturdy trekking bike may work on some sections; a narrow-tyred road bike is not a sensible default choice for the whole route.
A helmet, water, repair kit and lights belong on the trip even in daylight. Visibility and temperature change in the tunnels, while braking distances increase on gravel. Some stretches can become considerably more demanding after rain.
Check once more before departure
Reserve through the channel listed on the official website and check that the confirmation covers the direction, date and bicycle. For unusual bicycles, trailers or e-bikes, ask in advance whether the rack is suitable.
It is worth checking the project page again shortly before the travel date. Public holidays, operating changes or fully booked bicycle spaces can affect an individual plan more than the general seasonal period.
