The small sanctuary near Slatine celebrated its 480th anniversary in 2026. Its setting is striking, but its significance goes beyond a photograph. Access, weather and religious use deserve proper consideration when visiting.
An inscription gives the place a date
On the southern side of Čiovo, Gospa od Prizidnice sits among steep rocks above the sea. The Archdiocese of Split-Makarska points to an inscription above the entrance: the priest Juraj Stoidražić built the church in 1546 in honour of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. It is a tangible historical reference at a place otherwise readily described as “mystical”.
Priests lived as hermits in simple dwellings beside the church. The church's account mentions both Glagolitic and Latin liturgical traditions and use, with interruptions, until the mid-19th century. The rock was therefore more than scenery: it formed part of a secluded way of life.
The anniversary is now history; the place remains
The sanctuary's 480th anniversary was marked in 2026. Visit Split published a cultural, musical and spiritual programme for 4 to 12 September. Those dates have passed; they are not a current events programme for an October visit.
The occasion still provides useful context. Prizidnica is not an abandoned building waiting to be discovered, but a religious site with an enduring connection to Slatine. A visit should make room for that use: keep quiet, do not turn services into a backdrop for photographs, and respect instructions on site.
A cycle route is not a church opening time
Visit Split lists a cycle route of around 12.2 kilometres from Slatine via the Prizidnica area and Kava beach back to Slatine. Most of it is gravel; suitable mountain, gravel or trekking bikes are recommended. The cycling time given refers to this route, not automatically to a walking route or step-free access to the sanctuary.
Anyone wishing only to visit the church should consider the current approach and their own mobility separately. Secure footing, appropriate shoes and a check of wind and rainfall are more sensible than spontaneously tackling the exposed setting in beachwear. Nor does a tourist route listing guarantee that the interior is open every day.
Ask ahead about visiting the interior
The official church description names the parish office in Slatine as the relevant contact. The checked information contains no reliable daily visiting hours for the interior. Anyone particularly interested in seeing the furnishings or attending a celebration should therefore ask the parish about current access before travelling.
Even a short, respectful look at the site and its surroundings can make the outing worthwhile. It needs neither an invented legend nor the promise of a deserted secret spot. The combination of documented history, rock and sea is already powerful enough.
