Two young visitors were injured within a short time while jumping into the sea at Galebove stijene. A 24-year-old German man suffered serious injuries; police warn about height and unknown water depth.

Two emergency responses within a short time

The Istria Police Department reports two injuries at Galebove stijene near Pula on 2 September. At around 1 pm, a 20-year-old Polish woman struck a rock with her lower body while jumping and suffered minor injuries.

At around 2:30 pm, police say a 24-year-old German man jumped into the sea from a height of approximately five metres. He suffered serious injuries and remained in Pula hospital for treatment. The authority gives no diagnosis.

02

Clear water does not reveal every danger

From above, the Adriatic can look transparent and deep. Perspective, reflected light and waves make it difficult to judge, however, and rock ledges below the surface may be almost impossible to see from the jumping point.

Nor does watching someone else complete a jump prove that the same place is safe for a different take-off line, water level or body position.

03

The police warning

Police advise against jumping from great heights or at locations where the water depth is unknown. This applies especially to places not intended for jumping or explicitly closed to it.

Alcohol, group pressure and spectacular social-media footage compound a risk that often feels smaller before the jump than it really is. Deciding to turn back safely is not a lost holiday moment.

04

What the report does not prove

Two cases in one afternoon provide a concrete reason for caution, but they are not statistics for Croatia’s entire coastline. Nor does the report establish that every part of Galebove stijene is officially closed.

The two incidents and the official safety warning are confirmed. Visitors should follow current signs and choose a safe way into the water without jumping from a great height.
