An inspection found an electrified wire fence on the maritime domain blocking access to the beach. Its removal was ordered and later reported by the owner’s representative; an official follow-up inspection remains pending.

What the inspection found

According to the Maritime Ministry statement reproduced in full by Morski, staff from the Split Harbour Master’s Office outpost on Vis inspected Vela Čavojnica Bay together with maritime police and a municipal warden.

They found an electrified wire fence about 160 centimetres high on the maritime domain on both sides of the bay. According to the authority, the enclosure blocked access to the beach.

The order and the reported removal

The owner, who was present, was ordered to remove the fence from the maritime domain immediately. The harbour master’s office also announced a written removal order and a misdemeanour charge concerning the enclosure.

The owner’s communications representative later provided photographs and said the electrified section had been removed. This is an important update, but it is not yet a published official follow-up inspection.

The jetty is a separate question

The initial report also showed a concrete jetty or small landing place. The published response from the authorities, however, makes no finding about it.

It would therefore be wrong to infer from the confirmed fence violation that the jetty is either lawful or unlawful. That would require permits, cadastral and concession documents, and an explicit assessment by the competent authority.

What the case shows about coastal access

Croatia’s maritime domain is not equivalent to an ordinary private garden plot. A fence blocking public access to the coast may be problematic regardless of who owns the adjoining land.

Anyone who notices a dangerous or obstructive installation should keep their distance, document the location and notify the harbour authority, police or municipal inspection service. Removing it personally or entering private property creates additional risks.
