Between the imposing island of Krk and its wild sister Cres lies an almost untouched spot on the map – the island of Plavnik. Hardly anyone knows it, and even fewer people have ever set foot on it. A path leads from here through a mystical forest, past crumbling stone houses and the ruins of an old chapel. It feels as though time does not simply pass here, but buries itself in the earth.
The Blue Grotto – a love letter written in light and water
A few minutes farther by sea, an inconspicuous cleft opens in the rock. Yet those who swim inside find themselves in a cathedral of blue. Sunlight touches the water, the water touches the stone, the stone touches the eye – and suddenly you are no longer in Croatia, but in your own inner universe. The “Love Cave”, as it is also called, is nothing less than an experience for the soul.
Hidden coves on the east coast – where the world ends
Opposite Mali Plavnik, the small sister island, lie quiet beaches that appear in no guidebook. There is nothing here – and that is exactly the point. No noise, no reception, no tracks. Only you, the sea and the gentle sound of reality.
The north-west coast – a view into the distance
Admittedly, a fish farm is visible from here. But if you look beyond it – quite literally – you will discover beaches that wrap around the island like an embrace. The pebbles are smooth, the waves gentle, and dolphins sometimes appear as if merely stopping by to say “hello”.

Plavnik’s griffon vultures
You need only look upwards to witness a wonder: griffon vultures, with wingspans of up to 2,80 metres, circle majestically above the cliffs. They have nested here freely and undisturbed for generations. Their flight is a reminder that places still exist where nature directs the action.
Holm oaks, sheep and silent paths
Karst flora typical of the islands covers large parts of Plavnik. Juniper, holm oaks, dry grass. Among them are sheep that belong to nobody and fear no one. There are no roads, water pipes or electricity grid. And that is precisely what makes Plavnik a revelation.
Chapter 4: Drop anchor, breathe, arrive
Many visitors arrive by boat – either as part of a guided tour or independently. Anyone who anchors here usually stays longer than planned. Plavnik has a curious talent for making you feel that you have finally arrived.
Dive, swim, snorkel, drift. Beneath the water awaits a world of seagrass, starfish and small tunnels in the rock.
