The island north of Zadar cannot be reduced to one ferry landing. Molat, Brgulje and Zapuntel have their own village centres and coastal access. Plan the arrival harbour, routes and return together to get more from a visit.

01

Molat is more than the name on the ticket

On a timetable map, an island often looks like a point. For visitors, Molat consists of several arrival points and different routes. When booking, ask whether the vessel calls at Molat, Brgulje or Zapuntel—and which place suits your plan.

The Croatian Encyclopaedia gives an area of 22.18 square kilometres and three villages. Historic centres lie inland, with settlement areas along the coast too. Stepping ashore does not automatically put you in the middle of the village whose name appears on the service.

02

An inhabited island, not an empty holiday backdrop

The 2021 census counted 190 residents on Molat: 85 in Molat village, 63 in Brgulje and 42 in Zapuntel. That dated figure does not describe the current summer population, but it shows year-round life that does not end with the last excursion boat.

Zadar's tourism board describes pines, maquis, bays and walking paths. That is a good basis for a quiet stay, not a promise of empty beaches. Small harbours are places of work and life too. Private access, gardens and berths do not become public because they look attractive in a holiday photograph.

03

Two vessel services, two departure ports

Jadrolinija's catamaran line 9403 connects Zadar city harbour with Molat, Brgulje, Zapuntel and Ist. The right weekday, seasonal column and actual stop matter for a journey. The overall line name does not mean every sailing calls everywhere.

Ferry line 433 runs from Zadar-Gaženica via several islands to Molat and Ist. Gaženica and the city harbour are not the same departure point. Ferry and catamaran are not interchangeable for vehicles either: drivers need a suitable ferry service and ticket.

Plan the return before the walk

For a day trip, first check outward and return services on the same day, decide the return harbour and only then choose a route. A departure from another island village helps only if reaching it is realistic.

Do not rely on a general statement that the boat returns in the evening. Availability, intermediate calls and weather changes may matter on your date. Official operator pages link timetables and fares; check current traffic notices immediately before travel too.

05

Three villages are not a compulsory one-day itinerary

Molat suits slow travel precisely because everything need not fit into one landing. Choose one village area and a matching route to the coast. Another settlement can be a goal on a longer stay, not proof that you have truly seen the island.

The island is not generally car-free. Do not confuse Molat with differently organised small islands if you specifically seek a stay without road traffic. Walking may still be more pleasant if distance, supplies, weather and return time fit together.

06

Outside the season, quiet takes preparation

A restaurant or shop mentioned on a tourism page need not be open on your visit day. Check supplies and carry water, food and a charged phone. Longer walks require suitable shoes, navigation and a sensible turn-around point.

This portrait does not promise an identical excursion routine all year. It shows how to plan Molat without imposing an urban rhythm. A longer stay allows the three villages on different days; with only hours available, seeing one small section is entirely reasonable.
