The fire at Kula Norinska has been contained, according to the fire service; at Vid, homes were defended and the fire was kept under control on 4 October. Overnight watches were announced at both sites. The evening report does not say all work is complete.
The later report changes the morning picture
The Croatian Firefighting Association (HVZ) supplemented its report on Dalmatian fires on 4 October 2026 with a 7 pm update. By then the fire near Kula Norinska had been contained, while a new fire at Vid near Metković was still occupying crews.
These locations should not be merged into one imprecise alarm. Sequence matters too: the earlier daily report still described the Kula Norinska fire as active. Repeating only that morning status omits the later development.
Kula Norinska: work continued after the main attack
The Kula Norinska fire was reported on 3 October. HVZ says two Canadair CL-415 aircraft supported ground crews and containment was confirmed on 4 October. Some firefighters could then transfer to the new incident at Vid.
In an operational report, “contained” is not the same as the final status “extinguished”. The difference is practical here: crews still announced overhaul and guarding of the fire sites. A local closure or access road is not automatically clear just because the large smoke plume has diminished.
Vid: homes defended, overnight watch announced
For Vid, HVZ records an alert at 2 pm on 4 October and difficult marshy terrain. At 7 pm, the responsible commander reported that homes had been defended and the fire was being kept under control with aerial support. Four Canadairs took part in this operation.
Guarding and overhaul were announced overnight at both sites. That is the confirmed evening status. It does not establish that the fires were later fully extinguished or that conditions were unchanged the next morning.
What this report does not say
The report reviewed here gives no reliable basis for speculation about the cause. Nor does it prove a region-wide evacuation of the Neretva area. Each such claim requires separate confirmation.
For travellers, place names and timestamps matter more than a broad headline such as “Dalmatia is burning”. Check current notices for the actual route and follow local instructions. This article documents the status at 7 pm on 4 October; it is not a continuous live feed.
Keeping back helps crews
HVZ advises reporting smoke or fire via 193 or 112, clearly describing the location and mentioning people at risk. It also explicitly warns against approaching a fire to watch, photograph or film and thereby obstructing operations.
Keep access routes clear and do not drive to a fire site to inspect it yourself. The responsible authorities are the right source for a new assessment. Even after visible success, consideration remains necessary while firefighters secure the area and extinguish remaining hotspots.
