The fire was still active on Saturday morning
The vegetation fire near Ložišća on Brač remained active at 8:00 am on 12 September, according to the Croatian Firefighting Association. Overnight, 134 firefighters and 36 vehicles worked at the scene; four CL-415 water-bombing aircraft were assigned again in the morning.
The authority did not report the fire as localised, controlled or fully extinguished in that update. Timing therefore matters: later developments belong in the article only once officially confirmed.
The 1,500 hectares are a preliminary estimate
The affected area is estimated at about 1,500 hectares. Grass, low vegetation, maquis and forest are listed, so the figure covers an area containing several vegetation types.
It is not a final surveyed burn scar and does not mean that every square metre within the estimate was completely burned. A reliable final assessment will only be possible after the operation and land survey are complete.
The operation began late on Thursday
The alarm was raised at 11:13 pm on 10 September. Strong winds then pushed the fire towards Ložišća and Bobovišća while firefighters defended the settlements and homes.
The Firefighting Association reports that all homes were successfully protected. This is an important confirmed result, but not a guarantee that conditions across the entire fireground have already eased.
An evacuation by sea was prepared but not fully carried out
Preparations were made to move people to safety by sea if conditions worsened. According to the official operational account, however, a full evacuation by sea did not take place.
That distinction avoids unnecessary alarm: prepared transport shows the incident command’s precaution. It does not prove that every resident or visitor had to leave.
Reinforcements and extensive aerial support arrived on Friday
At times on 11 September, 118 firefighters and 38 vehicles were deployed. Five CL-415s and three Air Tractors supported the operation from the air during the day.
Another 52 firefighters and 17 vehicles were sent from other parts of Croatia. A further 44 personnel and twelve vehicles were on standby in Vučevica. These figures cover different phases and must not simply be added together as one simultaneous total.
The earlier road closure is no longer listed by HAK
HAK had temporarily listed the ŽC6188 between Ložišća and Dračevica as closed. The closure no longer appears in its current road update at 9:43 am on 12 September.
This confirms that HAK was no longer carrying the entry at that time. It is not blanket clearance for every side road, access route or area within the continuing firefighting operation; local barriers and emergency-service instructions still apply.
Wind remains relevant to operational planning
DHMZ continues to forecast strong bora and north-westerly gusts in the Adriatic on 12 September, reaching 50 knots beneath Velebit. This marine forecast does not give the exact wind speed at every point on Brač, but it shows that windy coastal conditions persist.
The incident command on the ground determines whether and how wind is currently affecting the fire edge near Ložišća. A general marine forecast cannot establish a specific direction of spread or the time when the fire will be controlled.
What travellers and residents can do now
Keep emergency routes and access roads clear, and do not visit merely to photograph or watch the fire. Anyone living or staying nearby should follow local instructions, keep their phone and documents ready, and check the latest HAK update before driving.
Call 112 in an immediate emergency. Smoke and ash can affect areas beyond the flames: close windows in heavy smoke, reduce outdoor activity and protect people who are especially vulnerable.
What is confirmed – and what remains open
Confirmed facts are that the fire remained active at 8:00 am on Saturday, the affected area was estimated at about 1,500 hectares, and 134 firefighters, 36 vehicles and four reassigned CL-415s were involved. Homes were protected and no full evacuation by sea took place.
The official morning update leaves the cause, final area, time of localisation and complete lifting of local restrictions open. Any new claim on those points requires a later official announcement.
