Matica hrvatska's governing body has approved the new island branch. It is intended to represent all of Brač – but it will not be formally founded or given an elected programme until the announced assembly in September.
Establishment has been approved – the branch has not yet been founded
According to consistent regional reporting, Matica hrvatska's governing body decided at its meeting on 7 July 2026 to establish an Ogranak Matice hrvatske Brač. The initiative has therefore received approval from the central cultural institution.
As of 26 August, Brač is not yet listed as an existing branch in Matica's current official overview. That matches the announced next step: a founding and electoral assembly in September is intended to put the organisation formally in place on the island.
The initiative began with a meeting in Postira
An initiative committee had already met in Postira in June. Andrija Biličić was elected chair of the initiative. Contemporary reporting named Nansi Ivanišević, priest Stanko Jerčić and Biličić as initiators; Matica vice-president Dražen Švagelj also attended and supported the plan.
According to Slobodna Dalmacija, 20 new membership applications had been submitted at this early meeting, alongside five existing members. A later report mentions approximately 50 people involved. These are snapshots of different phases, not contradictory final membership totals.
Why the name explicitly refers to all of Brač
The new structure is intended to represent not only Postira or Supetar, but the island as a whole. The proposed nine-member presidency would include one member from each of the seven municipalities, with the two remaining seats allocated to the town of Supetar.
For now, this distribution is an organisational proposal. Who takes the seats will be decided only through the announced election process. The geographical ambition also does not yet amount to a completed annual programme for every locality.
Matica hrvatska is more than a local events association
Matica hrvatska was founded in 1842 and defines itself as a Croatian cultural institution devoted to language, literature, science, art and the cultivation of cultural identity. Its local branches organise programmes, publish work and bring regional subjects into a larger network.
What the Brač branch will adopt in practice remains open. Golden Beach therefore attributes neither a journal nor fixed festivals, restoration projects or a budget to it. Its leadership and work plan must be approved first.

From island network to functioning branch
Brač had Matica structures before – but no active island-wide representation
Earlier branches in Bol and Postira were described in reporting as inactive. The new initiative is therefore not starting in a place without any tradition, but aims to place the work on a broader island basis.
That is precisely the difference between reviving a single local branch and the planned structure for all of Brač. Whether and how earlier holdings, projects or memberships will be incorporated organisationally has not yet been published.
What the September assembly must accomplish
The announced founding and electoral assembly is intended to mark the organisational transition from an initiative to a functioning branch. At a minimum, this includes electing the responsible bodies and confirming the future direction of work.
The reviewed information does not yet provide an exact date, a publicly confirmed venue or the names of the elected presidency. The word ‘September’ is also a plan, not an unchangeable event date for visitors.
The island's cultural potential is substantial – the programme remains open
Brač combines distinct local histories, a stonemasonry tradition, dialects, literature, sacred buildings, archives and a vibrant association culture. An island-wide Matica structure could bring such perspectives together and give smaller places a shared platform.
This is an editorial assessment of potential, not a list of projects already approved. The initiative will become credible through the programme that is publicly supported, funded and implemented after the founding.
How progress can be measured after the founding
Four things can be checked after the assembly: official inclusion in the branch directory, the elected leadership, a comprehensible programme and specific public dates. Only then can one assess whether the intended representation of every part of the island is also visible in practice.
Until then, the reliable position is this: the central body has approved the plan, Brač has a growing initiative network and formal founding is scheduled for September. That is more than a loose idea – but not yet a finished institution.
