“Tamo gdje počinje more” brings together historical studies on Lastovo. Its editor, length, series, ISBN and Academy price are confirmed – but a review without reading the complete book would still be dishonest.

01

A new publication, not a newly invented island history

In 2026, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, HAZU, published “Tamo gdje počinje more. Ogledi o povijesti Lastova”. The title can be rendered approximately in English as “Where the sea begins. Essays on the history of Lastovo”. The editor is Vedran Stojanović.

The volume is jointly published by HAZU and its Institute for Historical Sciences in Dubrovnik. It is presented as a collection of scholarly essays, not as a travel guide, coffee-table book or novel.

02

The bibliographical details are unusually complete

The official HAZU catalogue lists 324 pages, illustrations and a format of 24 centimetres. The book’s ISBN is 978-953-347-675-9. It belongs to the special editions of the Dubrovnik institute and, within them, is Volume 31 of the series “Contributions to the History of the Population of Dubrovnik and its Surroundings”.

The Academy lists a price of €25. Booksellers may display different prices or even a different page count; this article relies on the publisher’s information. Shipping, stock and international availability are not guaranteed by it.

03

Why Lastovo belongs in this Dubrovnik series

Lastovo lies far out in the southern Adriatic and was historically closely connected to Dubrovnik’s political and economic sphere. Its island position, sea links, administration and population history therefore cannot be understood separately from the broader movements of the Adriatic.

The series title explains the scholarly perspective better than a romantic label such as the “forgotten island”. Here, history is told not only through buildings, but through people, institutions, sources and connections.

What we can say about the contents

The subtitle identifies the volume as essays or studies on the history of Lastovo. A bookseller describes a multidisciplinary arc from ancient sea routes and relations with the Republic of Dubrovnik through to the modern era. This description is not, however, a chapter-by-chapter analysis verified by Golden Beach.

Without a table of contents and a complete reading, we neither name individual authors nor claim that a particular subject is covered conclusively. In an essay collection especially, the scope, method and weight of the contributions can vary considerably.

05

Why we do not recreate the cover

An official book cover is product design and copyrighted publishing material. Golden Beach therefore uses its own clearly labelled editorial image: an open scholarly book, maps and the town of Lastovo. It is neither the cover nor a reproduced page from inside the book.

The distinction matters editorially. An invented cover could later be shared as though it depicted the real edition. Anyone wishing to buy or catalogue the book should go directly to the HAZU catalogue and check the ISBN, edition and seller.

06

Who may find the new publication interesting

The volume is naturally aimed at historians, regional researchers, archives, libraries and readers with a deeper interest in Lastovo and the Dubrovnik region. For people who want to see the island as more than a nature park and holiday destination, a scholarly collection can also provide a counterpoint to a quick travel description.

The book is in Croatian. The HAZU catalogue does not list a German or English edition or translation. Anyone who does not read Croatian should check before buying whether summaries, contributions in other languages or a detailed table of contents are available.

07

How a book announcement can later become a review

A reliable review requires the complete book: its table of contents, authorship, source base, illustrations, arguments and the relationship between the contributions. Only then is it possible to say whether the collection is particularly strong for travellers, specialists or local history.

Until then, the fair interim conclusion is that HAZU has published a substantial, illustrated and clearly catalogued new volume on Lastovo. That is culturally newsworthy – but no reason to simulate praise or criticism.
