For the first time, more than five million tourist arrivals were recorded in a single August. Overnight stays, however, rose by only 0.5 per cent year on year—and that gap is precisely what makes the figures interesting.
The record concerns arrivals in August
In August 2026, Croatia recorded more than five million tourist arrivals in a single August for the first time. This was two per cent more than in the same month a year earlier.
The change in overnight stays was markedly smaller: 31.4 million nights were only 0.5 per cent more than in August 2025. The historic threshold is therefore established for arrivals—not automatically for every other tourism indicator.
The eight-month result is also growing
From January through the end of August, 17.5 million arrivals and 90.5 million overnight stays were recorded. According to the Croatian National Tourist Board, both figures were one per cent above the corresponding period of the previous year.
The data come from eVisitor. They cover commercial and non-commercial accommodation as well as nautical charter recorded through eCrew. Day trips, prices, revenue and the occupancy of individual businesses cannot be read from these two totals.
More arrivals do not mean equally many additional nights
The two per cent rise in August arrivals contrasts with an increase of only 0.5 per cent in overnight stays. The number of registered arrival transactions therefore grew faster than the number of nights.
HTZ links this gap to shorter trips and more cautious travel budgeting. That is a plausible interpretation by the authority, but not a complete analysis of the causes. The published, rounded totals also do not allow a precise average length of stay to be calculated.
The Adriatic coast and inland Croatia are growing at different rates
The Adriatic coast accounted for 86.7 million overnight stays in the first eight months, 0.5 per cent more than a year earlier. Continental Croatia, including Zagreb, recorded 3.8 million nights, an increase of one per cent.
Because the continental region starts from a much smaller base, its higher growth rate does not mean that it added more overnight stays in absolute terms. The two percentages describe very different scales.
Istria remains the leader in overnight stays
For January to August, HTZ ranks Istria first with 25.4 million overnight stays. It is followed by Split-Dalmatia County with more than 17 million and Kvarner with 15.2 million nights.
Among individual destinations, Rovinj, Dubrovnik, Poreč, Split, Umag and Medulin led the ranking. This order refers to the eight-month result and must not be confused with a table for August alone or with an assessment of quality.
Germany remains the largest source market
Guests from Germany generated 16.9 million overnight stays from January to August. They were followed by Croatia’s domestic market with 11.7 million and Slovenia with 9.6 million nights; Austria and Poland each accounted for 6.3 million.
These figures count overnight stays, not individual people or their spending. A source market with many nights is therefore not automatically the market with the most arrivals, the highest revenue or the longest average trip.
Why this is not yet a blanket record summer
Passing five million August arrivals for the first time is a clear record. At the same time, growth of 0.5 per cent in August nights and one per cent across the first eight months is much more moderate than the phrase “record summer” might suggest.
For a specific trip, current prices, available accommodation, transport and opening hours remain decisive. The national statistics describe Croatia’s overall movement—not how crowded or expensive a particular place is on a particular September day.
