The parish church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary with cemetery and bell tower on Molat, and the Church of the Holy Trinity on Vrgada, are documented in Croatia’s official cultural-property register. Their history reaches much further back than the current protection notices.
The official status can be checked for both places
Croatia’s cultural-property register lists the parish church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with cemetery and bell tower, on Molat under number Z-8012. The Church of the Holy Trinity on Vrgada is numbered Z-8011.
These register entries are the reliable basis for protection status. A media report places the decisions in late August and early September 2026; the register pages consulted do not contain every procedural detail mentioned there.
On Molat, the cemetery is part of the complex’s story
The Molat entry covers not only the church building but expressly the cemetery and bell tower. According to the register, the complex developed from the 14th or 15th century through the 19th century.
Gravestones from the 16th to 19th centuries also make the place an archive of the island community. Protection therefore concerns a historically evolved ensemble, not just one façade.
The bell tower is newer than the oldest layers
The bell tower at the Molat complex was completed in 1932. That date does not conflict with its medieval origin; it shows how churches on small islands were altered and extended over long periods.
Visitors therefore do not see a frozen single building phase. Medieval, early-modern and more recent elements together form the documented history.
Vrgada’s present church dates from the late 17th century
The register dates the present Church of the Holy Trinity on Vrgada to the late 17th century. Its significance lies in preserved sacred architecture and its connection to the site’s older use.
Ancient finds indicate that the site was used long before the present church was built. That does not automatically establish an unbroken, documented continuity of the same function across every century.
Protection and contact zones are not a new tourist label
Current reporting mentions protection and contact zones around the buildings. Such zones support heritage assessments of changes in the surrounding area.
They neither make the sites UNESCO properties nor automatically turn them into museums with fixed opening hours. Ownership, church use, access and services are separate questions.
An island visit needs respect and a timetable
Both churches stand in small island communities. Anyone wishing to see them should check boat connections first and should not treat a cemetery, worship or private neighbours as a freely available backdrop.
An open door cannot be assumed. For an interior visit, tour or church dates, local information is more useful than a blanket promise in a guidebook.
What the new classification makes visible
The two numbers draw attention to heritage beyond major old towns and cathedrals. On islands especially, small sacred buildings tell of long construction phases, burial culture and enduring local use.
What is documented is the register status and building history. UNESCO membership, daily visiting hours, and a claim that both places have only now been protected for the first time are not documented.
