Salt-field tours, crafts, cheese, music, exercise and street food: Pag's salt month runs until 25 September. Admission is free, but workshops still require registration.
A month that does more than put Pag salt on display
Misec paške soli, or Pag Salt Month, devotes four September weekends to the island's white gold. It is organised by Solana Pag, the Pag Tourist Board and the City of Pag. Tours, workshops, talks, food, sport and music illustrate how closely the landscape, work and the city's history are tied to salt production.
Admission to the announced events is free. That does not, however, mean every workshop has space for walk-ins: where capacity is limited, the organisers require advance registration.
4 and 5 September: crafts, island produce and Konc Art
On Friday 4 September, the programme begins with a visit to the Vala salt fields. The Najboje od Paga market starts on Stara Riva at 7 pm, followed by a concert by the male klapa group Galijota at Porta Salina at 8.30 pm.
On Saturday 5 September, Ana Paška's Konc Art begins at Magazin at 9 pm. Because places are limited, the Tourist Board asks visitors to register with the organising initiative Žene za otok Pag. The permanent salt-making exhibition is open from 9 am to 9 pm during the opening weekend.
10 and 11 September: salt meets cheese, wine and stories
On Thursday 10 September, Jutra u poljima soli returns to Vala. At 5 pm, Željka Crljenko Mihlin leads another Salt & Craft workshop at Magazin. The monthly programme does not specify the exact time of the morning tour, so visitors should confirm it directly with the organiser before travelling.
Friday pairs salt gathering with Pag's best-known culinary partner. After Žene žgribaju and another morning in the salt fields, an evening of salt, cheese, wine, liqueurs and music begins at Magazin at 6 pm. At 7 pm, the Val association presents the Legend of Pag Cheese there.
17 to 19 September: by bicycle, rowing boat and on foot
On Thursday 17 September, a bicycle ride around the saltworks starts at 7 am from Trg kralja Petra Krešimira IV. The salt fields, the exhibition and a workshop by Nikol Jakopic Donadić at Magazin at 5 pm are also on the programme.
Friday 18 September brings another morning at Vala, a rowing-club promenade and a natural-science lecture by Petar Žutinić at Magazin at 6 pm. On Saturday, Solanski đir, a walk along the saltworks embankment, starts in Fumija at 10 am.
24 and 25 September: the culinary finale
On Thursday 24 September, the programme returns once more to the salt fields. A street-food evening with a concert begins on Stara Riva at 6 pm. The city's monthly overview does not specify which dishes will be available or exactly when the music starts.
On Friday 25 September, another morning at Vala, Mladi žgribaju and the salt exhibition close the published programme. Žgribanje means the traditional raking and gathering of salt—not merely a folkloric word, but work passed down through generations on Pag.
Vala and Magazin tell two sides of the same story
Vala is the practical side: paths between shallow pans cross a landscape where seawater, sun, wind and labour come together. Sturdy shoes, sun protection and drinking water belong in the bag even in September; this is not an ordinary city walk.
Magazin complements that experience with the permanent salt-making exhibition, which explains the history, working methods and importance of the saltworks to Pag. Outside the specifically stated opening hours on the first weekend, visitors should check current times in advance.
How to keep free from becoming unplanned
For workshops, the Tourist Board lists info.solanapag@gmail.com. For Ana Paška's Konc Art, the address is zenezapag@gmail.com. Registration is especially sensible wherever the official page explicitly mentions limited capacity.
For the other dates, reload the City or Tourist Board page on the day, confirm the meeting point and start time, and allow some leeway between the salt fields, old town and harbour. That way, Salt Month remains a rewarding look at Pag's work and culture rather than just a list to tick off in a hurry.
