A large vehicle carrier has brought more than 2,000 new cars directly from the Far East to Rijeka for the first time. Distribution by rail and road will now determine whether this becomes more than a single record port call.

01

What arrived in Rijeka on 24 August

The Ro-Ro vehicle carrier AICC Huanghu called at Rijeka with more than 2,000 vehicles loaded in China. According to information from Luka Rijeka reported in the region, this was the first direct vehicle shipment from the Far East to the port. The vehicles are intended mainly for Croatia and neighbouring markets.

“More than 2,000” is the order of magnitude reliably supported by regional reporting that quotes Luka Rijeka management. Golden Beach does not turn it into an exact figure while no directly accessible official cargo manifest is available.

02

Ro-Ro means vehicles roll over ramps

Ro-Ro stands for roll-on/roll-off. Unlike containers, operational cars are driven on and off over the ship’s ramps. Large vehicle carriers stack them across several decks; the terminal then needs space, drivers, inspections and a precise sequence for onward transport.

The striking image of a full quay is therefore only the middle of the logistics chain. Before it come the sea journey and port planning; afterwards come rail wagons, car transporters, customs and documentation processes, and distribution to importers and markets.

03

Rijeka is not intended to be the final destination

According to the report, the unloaded vehicles will be distributed onward by rail and road. This is the economic core: Rijeka wants to function as an Adriatic gateway for Croatia and Central and South-Eastern Europe. A short sea route to the European market helps only if the port, railways and roads provide enough capacity all the way to the recipient.

Luka Rijeka names Emil Frey Logistics and Lagermax as business partners. These details describe the concrete organisation of the chain, but do not yet prove that a permanent scheduled service from the Far East exists.

A first direct port call is not yet a regular service

The port call shows that a vessel, terminal and hinterland transport were brought together for a large shipment. It does not prove that a vehicle carrier from China will now arrive weekly or monthly. That would require confirmed follow-up calls, contracts or a published regular service.

The measured wording is therefore: a new direct corridor has been tested or opened in practice, and those involved expect further volumes. Whether it becomes a stable service can be judged only from recurring calls and sustained cargo throughput.

05

22,000 in the first half and 60,000 as the full-year forecast

A member of Luka Rijeka’s management put vehicle throughput in the first half of 2026 at around 22,000 units and named approximately 60,000 as the expectation by year-end. These are company figures and a forecast, not an annual result already achieved.

The figures nevertheless show why a shipment of more than 2,000 cars matters: it represents a noticeable share of the volume handled in the first half. At the same time, a single large delivery can have a strong statistical effect without guaranteeing a long-term trend.

06

Space is the scarce resource

According to the company, insufficient terminal space limits further growth. Cars need large contiguous areas during handling, sorting and collection. If onward distribution stalls, one large shipment blocks the next.

Success therefore depends on more than the harbour basin or the size of the ship. Rail connections, available wagons, lorry time slots and storage areas all matter together. The port becomes a gateway only when these transitions work reliably.

07

What motorists will notice today

The arrival does not overnight change the price of a particular model or the delivery time for every buyer. Which brands and versions reach dealers, and when, is determined by the importer, approval process, distribution and the specific order. A photograph from the port cannot support a promise of discounts.

For travellers, the infrastructural development is the main point of interest: more port and freight traffic may affect access routes and rail logistics, but does not automatically mean congestion on a particular day. Current traffic reports remain what matters for a journey to Rijeka.
