The warning has applied since 23 September
Dubrovnik-Neretva County has reported short-term faecal pollution at the official Plaža Ston monitoring point. A seawater sample taken on 22 September 2026 during the regional programme’s tenth testing cycle exceeded the permitted Escherichia coli limit, so it fails Croatia’s bathing-water requirements and bathing is not recommended until a new official notice.
Not all of Ston or Pelješac is closed
The notice specifically names the Plaža Ston monitoring point; it does not establish pollution along every part of the municipality’s coast or at all Pelješac beaches. Anyone choosing another beach should check that location’s own current monitoring result rather than rely on a general place colour or old search result.
E. coli is a faecal indicator
E. coli is used in bathing-water monitoring as an indicator of faecal contamination. The official notice confirms the exceedance but identifies neither a specific polluter nor a technical cause, so claims about a particular pipe, vessel or business would be premature. Environmental and other competent inspectorates have been informed, but any investigation is separate from the confirmed laboratory result.
Control samples will determine the all-clear
The county says repeat samples will be taken until the pollution ends. Clear water, no smell and no visible discharge cannot replace those analyses, and the notice sets no fixed reopening time. The advice ends with a new official announcement, not automatically after one day or a change in weather.
What bathers should do now
Do not swim at Plaža Ston for now, and follow signs or barriers on site. Choose another officially monitored location only after checking its latest sample. For short-term pollution, the sample and publication date matter more than an older seasonal colour on Croatia’s bathing-water map.

Confirmed facts are the 22 September sample, the E. coli limit exceedance, classification as short-term faecal pollution and advice not to bathe at Plaža Ston until further notice.
