From 3 to 6 September, eleven city museums will open their doors for more than 160 free activities. Admission is free — but workshops, guided tours and limited capacity still require planning.

Eleven museums join forces

Zagreb is holding its ZG MUV Museum Weekend from 3 to 6 September 2026. According to the city, eleven institutions are taking part with more than 160 programme items. Admission and the announced activities are free.

The range extends from the archaeological and ethnographic museums to natural history, school and city museums, contemporary art, technology and Klovićevi dvori. This is not one festival site, but a programme spread across the city.

02

Thursday opens the event — Friday to Sunday bring the full programme

The joint opening is scheduled for 8 pm on Thursday at Klovićevi dvori. The museums’ regular weekend hours run from 10 am to 8 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The closing event takes place at Zagreb City Museum at 8 pm on Sunday.

Not every activity runs throughout that entire period. Tours, talks and workshops have their own times. Anyone who saves only the general opening hours may still arrive at the wrong door.

03

Free does not automatically mean no registration

The city expressly notes that individual activities require advance registration because capacity is limited. This applies particularly to workshops and formats that must keep groups small.

For spontaneous visitors, exhibitions and open activities provide a more reliable base. Preferred events should first be marked in the official programme and then checked for registration requirements, language and meeting point.

04

A route is better than the longest possible list

Eleven museums cannot sensibly be ticked off in one day. Travel, admission, cloakrooms and one longer activity all take time. Good planning groups two or three nearby institutions and leaves a free block for an unexpected discovery.

The official mobility page brings together advice for moving around the city. In the centre, walking and trams are often more reliable than searching for a parking space directly outside a museum.

05

English-language activities are included too

The overall programme is predominantly in Croatian, but also lists some activities in English. International visitors should therefore check the language stated for the specific event, not just its title.

One English-language tour at an institution does not mean that every event there is translated. Anyone who needs a particular language should check the event details and any registration requirement together.

06

These eleven institutions form the official group

The participants are the Archaeological Museum, Ethnographic Museum, Croatian Natural History Museum, Croatian School Museum, Klovićevi dvori, Zagreb City Museum, Prigorje Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Arts and Crafts’ MUO Gallery, Nikola Tesla Technical Museum and the Art Pavilion.

Some institutions are using temporary locations and gallery spaces because of renovation or rebuilding. The precise address therefore belongs in the plan just as much as the museum’s name.

07

A simple plan for a good weekend

First choose a theme, then combine no more than three nearby stops per day. Secure registration for one sought-after workshop and deliberately leave the rest flexible. That keeps the weekend a cultural experience rather than a sprint against the timetable.

Reload the official programme before setting out. Changes, fully booked places and precise meeting points may be more current than any editorial overview.
