Croatia is supporting construction of a new working vessel for navigational safety. The documents distinguish an offer price of 2.78 million euros from state funding spread across several budget years. The vessel has not yet been delivered.

A vessel for work that usually stays in the background

On 14 October, the government considered co-financing a working catamaran for Plovput. HINA’s report published that day states that approval was granted. The official meeting document describes the project more precisely: an offer from Iskra brodogradilište 1 in Šibenik, worth 2,780,000 euros excluding VAT, was selected for design and construction.

Plovput is responsible for navigational safety tasks. These include establishing and maintaining fairways, installing and maintaining navigation marks, and coastal radio services. A working catamaran serves this infrastructure. The news is therefore not an announcement of a new ferry, a tourist catamaran route or additional passenger places.

02

Three amounts describing different things

The selected offer price is 2.78 million euros excluding VAT. The new approval to assume budget commitments, however, concerns 2,502,000 euros excluding VAT for 2027 and 2028, with 1,251,000 euros in each year. The rounded figure of 2.5 million used in brief news reports therefore does not represent the full offer price.

The explanatory document also lists 72,355 euros for 2026. Over the three years, this gives planned state co-financing totalling 2,574,355 euros excluding VAT. These figures do not mean that everything has already been transferred. The commitments must be incorporated into the respective financial plans; financing, payment and completion are separate steps.

03

Why the state is involved

The proposal justifies support on the grounds that Plovput’s available funds are insufficient for this project. It refers to the company’s public remit and the possibility of state funding when fees and other income do not cover necessary tasks. The new vessel is thus part of equipping a public infrastructure service.

This helps put the news in perspective: the benefit arises not at a ticket counter but through work on maritime infrastructure. A functioning navigation light or mark is easily overlooked in everyday life, yet maintenance and replacement require staff, materials and suitable vessels. A single investment does not establish a measured improvement in every sea area.

04

What remains unknown about the completed vessel

The government document reviewed gives no binding delivery date. The budget years 2027 and 2028 therefore cannot be used to calculate an exact commissioning date. Neither technical performance figures nor a future permanent operating port are inferred here from a symbolic image.

For future reporting, confirmed construction progress, reliable vessel data and eventually the handover will be relevant. At present, the contractor, selected offer and funding allocation are the news. For skippers, current charts, corrections and navigational warnings remain authoritative regardless of this new vessel.
