For eight hours, the harbourmaster's office, its branch offices and VTS will step up inspections across the Split maritime area. The focus is on speed, boat hire and day-trip vessels – combining enforcement with education.
An announced targeted operation, not a surprising new rule
Croatia's Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure has announced the Sigurna plovidba 2026 Split operation for Tuesday, August 25, 2026. From 10:00 to 18:00, the Split Harbourmaster's Office, its branch offices and the Vessel Traffic Service VTS will conduct stepped-up inspections across the Split maritime area.
The operation does not create special rules for that day. It concentrates the enforcement of regulations already in force. Anyone navigating in compliance with the rules or using a properly registered service should not interpret the announcement as a closure of the area.
Speed and planing are clearly in focus
The ministry expressly mentions unlawful speed in areas where fast navigation is prohibited or restricted. Along Croatia's coast, the general maximum within 300 metres is eight knots. Motorboats and personal watercraft may begin planing only outside this zone.
Additional distances from the coast and marked bathing areas apply according to vessel length. Ports, narrow channels, diver-down signals and local orders may impose stricter requirements. Staying below eight knots therefore does not automatically make every route permissible.
Rent-a-boat operations are not inspected only on the water
A second focus is commercially hired sports and recreational craft. Relevant matters may include vessel documents, registration, safety equipment, the operator's qualifications, handover and the actual way the service is run. The inspection concerns providers and users; it is not directed against hiring a boat as such.
For guests, the practical preparation remains simple: read the contract and final price, clarify the permitted navigation area and return time, ask to see the safety equipment, document damage and check the required licence. A proper briefing offers more protection than assuming a hire boat must be self-explanatory simply because it is available for rent.
Day-trip vessels are also being inspected
The announcement also names vessels offering day trips with passengers. Matters that may be examined include certification, crew, passenger numbers, safety equipment and lawful operation within public passenger transport. The authority decides on site which points to inspect on each vessel.
A patrol boat seen beside an excursion vessel therefore does not mean that a violation has already been established. Inspection, a finding of fault and a penalty are three different stages. Only an official results report can later show how many shortcomings were actually identified.

Eight hours of targeted inspections
VTS complements the harbourmaster's work
Croatia's VTS monitors and organises vessel traffic in the designated areas. During a coordinated operation, this traffic picture provides information about movements, course, speed and potential conflicts; the competent units carry out the operational inspections at sea.
This does not create a new radio service for leisure skippers. Existing reporting, collision-avoidance and listening-watch obligations continue to apply. Anyone addressed by an authority or instructed to stop should reduce speed safely and follow the directions given.
The ministry says enforcement and education go together
The ministry explicitly describes the operation as inspection, enforcement and preventive education. It is therefore more than a pure fining exercise: offences are to be pursued, while participants are also reminded of safe navigation and consideration for others in a heavily used summer cruising area.
That wording does not justify speculation about exceptionally high fines or a predetermined detection rate. The type and amount of any penalty depend on the specific offence. Knowing only the announced time window tells us nothing about the eventual results.
What makes practical sense between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Skippers should have complete documents and safety equipment on board, give bathing zones a wide berth and not judge the 300-metre line by eye. On hire boats, keep the contract and briefing information readily available. Excursion passengers do not need to film or comment on an ongoing inspection; they should follow the crew's instructions.
The operation is not a reason to postpone risky manoeuvres until outside the inspection window. The rules apply in the morning, in the evening and on every other day as well. The visible focus is simply a reminder that the authorities enforce them during ordinary holiday traffic too.
After 6 p.m., a new source is needed for the results
This article reports the announced situation before the operation begins. Figures for inspected vessels, detected offences or fines imposed are therefore not yet available. They may be added later only on the basis of an official results publication.
If the ministry publishes a report, Golden Beach will clearly separate the scheduled details from the outcome data. Until then, the reliable statement remains: the inspection is announced for August 25 from 10:00 to 18:00 and focuses particularly on speed, boat hire and day-trip vessels.
