Consumer prices in August were provisionally 4.1 per cent higher than a year earlier and 0.3 per cent above July. Energy and services are driving the increase—but the first figure is not yet the final detailed statistics.
Two comparisons, two different statements
According to the flash estimate from Croatia's statistical office, DZS, consumer prices in August 2026 were 4.1 per cent higher than in August 2025. They rose by 0.3 per cent compared with July 2026. Both figures describe inflation, but answer different questions.
The annual comparison shows how much higher the price level was than twelve months earlier. The monthly comparison shows the latest movement. It would not be sound to extrapolate August's 0.3 per cent as an identical rate for every subsequent month.
Energy and services are pulling upwards
In the broad flash breakdown, energy was 17.4 per cent higher than in the same month a year earlier. Services rose by 7.2 per cent. These categories are therefore contributing much more strongly to the current pressure than the overall average alone suggests.
Food, beverages and tobacco were only 0.1 per cent higher year on year in this estimate, while non-energy industrial goods were 1.3 per cent lower. That does not mean every food item stayed at the same price or every consumer product became cheaper: these are group indices containing many individual prices and weights.
What travellers may notice
Services include areas that holidaymakers may feel too, such as restaurants, accommodation, transport or personal services. At this stage, however, the published flash estimate does not provide a reliable itemised list of prices for holidays in Croatia.
For travel planning, the actual price of accommodation, a ferry, a restaurant or admission is therefore more important than the overall inflation rate. The index explains the setting, but does not replace a current comparison of offers.
Do not mix CPI and HICP
The national consumer price index, CPI, is estimated at 4.1 per cent for August. According to DZS, the European harmonised index, HICP, was 3.7 per cent higher than a year earlier. Different baskets and weights can produce different rates.
Use HICP when comparing Croatia with other EU countries. CPI can be used when describing domestic Croatian developments. A figure from one system should not be combined with a previous-year figure from the other to suggest an apparent acceleration.
Why the figure is still called provisional
According to DZS, the flash estimate is based on about 80 to 90 per cent of the data needed for the full index. It is an official early figure, but not yet the detailed final release.
The complete ECOICOP results are scheduled for 15 September. Individual groups can then be examined more precisely. Until then, 4.1 per cent remains the official flash estimate—not an already finalised detailed account.
