After years of interruption, Unije's grass landing area is to become usable for small aircraft again. The reported registration is an important step for the island. It does not yet mean flight operations are fully established or a scheduled service is available to book.

Good news with an important qualification

Unije has taken a decisive step towards the return of its landing area. On 12 October, Morski reports, citing Mali Lošinj mayor Ana Kučić, a decision by the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency dated 6 October. After around 14 years of interruption, the area is said to be registered again. The same report, however, notes that work to prepare the site is still being completed.

That is the news – not an already established resumption of any and all flights. Our editorial team does not have the aviation agency's original decision. We therefore do not pass on specific operating limits or supposed immediately usable clearance to approach from the media report as official instructions.

What the city decided back in May

An earlier prerequisite can be read directly in the official gazette: on 14 May, Mali Lošinj's city council gave Aeroklub Unije consent to register the city-owned land. This concerns plot 20060 in the cadastral municipality of Unije, totalling 73,107 square metres. That land area is not the size of an authorised runway.

The decision assigns the aeroclub responsibility for the necessary permits, maintenance and operating requirements. Year-round availability is the aim, insofar as conditions allow it. This is not a guarantee of an all-weather airport. The owner's consent in May and aviation registration in October also remain two separate steps.

What travellers can take from this

The Civil Aviation Agency describes registered take-off and landing areas as a category for non-commercial flights under visual flight rules by day. Such registration alone creates neither a timetable nor tickets for sale. Anyone wishing to visit Unije should therefore not base their travel on an allegedly newly opened scheduled flight.

For pilots, this report does not replace flight preparation: usability, consent, condition and applicable operating documents must be checked directly before a specific flight. For everyone else, the distinction is what matters for now: the island is regaining an option; when that becomes a particular connection actually available to use will be another news story.
