Ramps 3 and 4 at the Matulji interchange are closed until 12 December. The signed route between Istria, Matulji and Opatija uses the A7. This does not mean the entire A8 is closed.
The entire connection between Istria and Rijeka is not closed
In its notice of 23 October at 21:04, HAC confirms the closure of ramps 3 and 4 at the A8 Matulji interchange until 12 December 2026. HAK also lists the arrangement. Specific connections are affected; this does not amount to a continuous full closure of the A8 or the Učka Tunnel.
For journeys to Matulji or Opatija, your usual final exit may therefore be unsuitable. Check not only the destination in your navigation app, but also the proposed interchange. The shortest route on screen is no help if it still uses a closed ramp.
From Istria and back: via the A7
From Istria to Matulji or Opatija, HAC gives the sequence Matulji (A8) – Učka (A7) – Trinajstići (A7) – L58108 – D8. In the opposite direction, take D8 and L58108 to Trinajstići, then the A7 via Učka and back to the A8 towards Istria.
These place and road names help cross-check navigation against the published route. They are not instructions to turn around on a closed ramp or find your own shortcut through residential streets. Temporary signs apply on site.
Trinajstići also matters when arriving from Rijeka or Zagreb
For journeys from Rijeka and Zagreb to Matulji or Opatija, the operator’s route likewise uses the A7 Trinajstići interchange, followed by L58108 and D8. Drivers arriving from Slovenia or Italy for these destinations should also leave at Trinajstići and follow the signed onward route.
Allow sufficient time if you have a fixed appointment or an accommodation handover afterwards. Without a starting point, traffic conditions and vehicle details, it would be misleading to quote a blanket amount of extra driving time. Especially on the final stretch, the route actually open to traffic should matter more than saving a few minutes.
Other roadworks have different end dates
HAC also lists work between Rijeka zapad and Učka towards Rupa, Istria and Opatija until 23 December, plus separate arrangements at the D8/D66 Kuk junction until 11 June 2027. These dates do not automatically extend the ramp closure to either later deadline.
12 December remains the currently announced date for the two ramps, not a guarantee of reopening to the minute. Open the HAK and HAC reports again before your next journey. A saved October notice can explain the traffic arrangements, but cannot replace a live check in December.
