Split–Ancona, Dubrovnik–Bari and Split–Bari remain suspended until 21 October inclusive, according to Jadrolinija. Travellers with existing bookings should check the operator's offer and their EU passenger rights.
The operator has extended the outage again
Jadrolinija now gives a substantially longer period for the technical outage of the car ferry Dalmacija: all sailings on three international routes remain suspended through 21 October 2026 inclusive. The affected services are route 53 Split–Ancona, route 54 Dubrovnik–Bari and route 56 Split–Bari. For passengers who have already purchased tickets, the operator explicitly refers to the passenger rights under EU Regulation 1177/2010.
The decisive data point is the operator's published period, not speculation about repair progress. Even an announced technical completion date would not yet confirm that every sailing is resuming. The latest operator information and the passenger's individual booking message therefore remain decisive for each specific journey.
Why three connections disappear at once
Dalmacija was the central vessel for the three international vehicle routes in the 2026 timetable concept. It was due to serve Split–Ancona year-round and, during the season, also Dubrovnik–Bari and Split–Bari. A technical failure of this single large Ro-Pax vessel therefore affects not just one departure but several timetables between the Croatian and Italian Adriatic coasts.
For travellers, the route number is more useful than the vessel's name alone. Anyone with a ticket or booking confirmation should check the route, date and service number: L53, L54 and L56 are suspended during the reported period. This applies to foot passengers as well as bookings with a car, motorcycle, motorhome or trailer. Whether the operator arranges alternative transport for a particular date must be stated in the individual message or a later update.
What the announcement expressly does not cover
The suspension does not apply wholesale to all Jadrolinija ferries, let alone Croatia's entire island network. Local connections such as Split–Supetar, Valbiska–Merag or Zadar–Preko are not automatically affected by this announcement. Nor should other vessels and operators be included in the disruption without a separate notice of their own.
Zadar–Ancona is particularly easy to confuse with the affected services. This seasonal connection is operated by the catamaran Jelena and is not part of the Dalmacija announcement. According to the published timetable, however, it is scheduled to run only until 30 August 2026 and carries passengers only, not vehicles, on the fast-boat route. It is therefore not an equivalent replacement for anyone travelling with a car, motorcycle or motorhome.
The right order of steps for travellers who have already booked
First, save the booking confirmation and check whether Jadrolinija or the point of sale has already sent a message. Then read the specific offer: Is another departure, another route or a refund being offered? Cancelling independently too soon can unnecessarily move the case into voluntary cancellation terms. It is better to document in writing the cancellation initiated by the operator and the solution you want.
For enquiries, Jadrolinija lists the call centre at 072 30 33 37, from abroad at +385 72 30 33 37, and booking@jadrolinija.hr for booking questions. The message should include the booking number, names, original route and departure, vehicle details and a clear choice: alternative transport at the earliest opportunity or a refund. Keep screenshots, emails and receipts together in one folder; whenever possible, ask for telephone assurances to be confirmed in writing.
Alternative transport or money back: the key decision
When a sailing is cancelled, EU Regulation 1177/2010 generally provides a choice: alternative transport to the final destination at the earliest opportunity at no extra cost, or reimbursement of the fare within seven days. Anyone who still needs to travel should therefore not ask only for a ‘refund’, but explicitly request a practicable alternative. Anyone abandoning the journey should request reimbursement through the documented booking channel.
This choice does not automatically mean that every independently booked alternative will be reimbursed in full. Before buying an expensive flight, another ferry or a long overland route at your own expense, ask the operator to confirm the proposed solution and coverage of the costs. If immediate action is unavoidable, document the necessity, price comparison and all receipts clearly. Consequential costs may be assessed differently in law from the original fare.
Refreshments, accommodation and compensation are separate issues
In addition to alternative transport or reimbursement, the Regulation provides, under certain conditions, for assistance during the waiting period and percentage-based compensation for delayed arrival. These claims have their own time thresholds and exceptions. They do not become identical simply because Jadrolinija refers generally to the EU Regulation in its announcement. Relevant factors include the scheduled duration of the journey, the actual delay and the specific alternative offered.
A technical failure is not the same as a cancellation due to hazardous weather conditions. Even so, it would be irresponsible to promise without reviewing the individual case that hotel nights, motorway tolls, fuel, missed connections or pre-booked accommodation will automatically be reimbursed. Report such costs immediately, agree them in advance where possible and keep complete receipts. If a claim is rejected, the first step is a written complaint to the operator.
Replanning with a vehicle without driving into the next trap
Anyone who needs to reach Italy with a vehicle should compare not only departure times but also vehicle height, total length, trailers, pet rules, check-in and the actual destination port. A different international ferry may mean a longer drive to the port or a later arrival. The ticket-price difference alone says little about total costs once accommodation, fuel and onward travel are included.
The overland route around the northern Adriatic remains a possible planning option, but it is not a blanket recommendation for every journey from Dubrovnik or Split. Distance, border route, tolls, driving hours and overnight stays must be calculated realistically. For foot passengers, Zadar–Ancona may be an option if seats are available on the travel date and the seasonal timetable fits. Travellers with a vehicle cannot use this connection.
The 15-minute check before every new booking
First open Jadrolinija's latest traffic notice and look for a newer operator update. Then check the original booking, the written alternative offer and the terms of the possible replacement. Only after that should further tickets be purchased. For a group, clarify whether passengers and vehicle will be rebooked together; a passenger connection without the vehicle solves only half the problem.
Shortly before departure, check the terminal, check-in time and vehicle category again. Anyone who has chosen reimbursement should keep the confirmation and proof of payment until the money arrives. And anyone travelling after 21 October should not rely on the calendar date alone: a confirmed departure in the current booking system or a new operator notice is more reliable than assuming that the timetable will automatically resume the next morning.
