At 12:21, HAK reports six catamaran routes and one ferry route suspended – from Kvarner to Zadar and Split. Which services are affected and what ‘suspended’ means for later departures.

01

The situation has already changed since the morning

On Friday, 21 August 2026, at 12:21, the Croatian Automobile Club HAK lists seven sea services as suspended because of adverse weather. Six are catamaran routes and one is a conventional ferry route. The midday situation differs from the early-morning list – precisely why this report carries a timestamp.

A suspended route is not automatically cancelled for the entire day. The status describes current operations. Wind, waves and clearance from the operator may allow later sailings to resume or cause them to be cancelled as well. The current operator and HAK status for the specific departure remains decisive.

02

HAK names these six catamaran routes

The suspended routes are Kraljevica–Crikvenica–Senj–Baška–Lopar–Rab–Lun, Rijeka–Cres–Unije–Susak–Ilovik–Mali Lošinj and Rijeka–Rab–Novalja. This affects several car-free Kvarner services, including the seasonal Kvarnerski most and two important routes from Rijeka.

In the central and southern sectors, HAK also names Zadar (Gaženica)–Ancona, Zadar–Pula and Split–Bol–Split. The notice is deliberately route-specific: it does not say that all ferry traffic from Rijeka, Zadar or Split has stopped. Other routes may operate unless the operator or live status separately reports them as affected.

This one vehicle ferry route is affected in the midday update

HAK lists Zadar/Gaženica–Ist/Kosirača–Olib–Silba–Premuda–Mali Lošinj as the ferry route. Vehicles as well as passengers may be affected. Anyone planning to change islands by car should therefore not simply switch to one of the named catamaran services: catamarans on these routes do not carry cars.

Another ferry service appeared in the morning radar check. At 12:21 it was no longer on HAK’s list. This does not prove that every sailing operated as scheduled; it merely shows how quickly live status changes. Old screenshots and forwarded lists become outdated within hours in such weather.

04

Zadar–Ancona is now suspended as an entire route

The previous evening, Jadrolinija had initially confirmed only the cancellation of Jelena’s 08 sailing. The seasonal timetable assigns that time to the Ancona–Zadar direction. The newer HAK update now lists the entire Zadar (Gaženica)–Ancona route as suspended. The earlier wording that no separate status was available for the 14 sailing from Zadar is therefore outdated as current travel advice.

This still does not mean that every later sailing on another day is cancelled. At Friday lunchtime, however, anyone intending to travel on Jelena today must no longer focus solely on the individual morning sailing. The specific booking must be checked with the operator. Jelena is also a passenger catamaran, not a substitute for Dalmacija’s vehicle-ferry routes that are currently suspended for technical reasons.

05

What booked passengers should do first

Do not cancel independently on the basis of this overview alone. First check the booking email, SMS, app and operator website. Then establish whether the specific sailing is cancelled, delayed or merely temporarily held. If cancellation is confirmed, document whether you want reimbursement or rerouting at the earliest opportunity.

Anyone with connections, accommodation or a hire car booked should retain all messages and receipts. An expensive alternative arranged independently is not automatically reimbursable. For island services, the most sensible replacement may be a later sailing, another route by bus or car, or an additional night – but only specific information from the operator turns that into a reliable plan.

06

Bad weather does not remove all passenger rights

In the event of cancellation, the basic choice between reimbursement of the fare and rerouting at the earliest opportunity remains. Adverse weather conditions that endanger safe operation of the ship can, however, limit additional entitlements. In particular, this includes any blanket promise of accommodation and the additional compensation of 25 or 50 percent.

Golden Beach therefore promises neither hotel costs nor a fixed cash payment. Refreshments are to be assessed in reasonable relation to the waiting time and only where available or reasonably obtainable. Golden Beach’s existing guide to ferry passenger rights explains this distinction in greater detail and is a better basis for the specific case than a blanket demand.

07

Before travelling to the port, the newest timestamp matters

Open HAK and the operator information again immediately before departure. Check not only the route but also the departure port, time and vessel type. A service may be affected in one direction or resume with a different sailing. Anyone reading only the route name misses these distinctions.

This article documents the position at 12:21 on 21 August 2026. It remains useful as a chronology and guide to rights, but does not replace a live check at the port. As soon as HAK removes a route from the list or the operator confirms a specific sailing, that newer information is decisive for the travel decision.
