About 75,000 vehicles have been counted at the cape since May, roughly one fifth fewer than in 2025. The number remains large — and it is not a visitor count. Entry on foot or by bicycle is still free.
75,000 means vehicles, not people
The head of the Kamenjak public institution told HRT that about 75,000 vehicles had entered since the season began in May. The figure was around 20 per cent below the previous year’s level.
Each car may carry one person or several, and some vehicles enter more than once. The vehicle total therefore cannot be converted into a reliable visitor count.
Less traffic does not yet mean low pressure
A reduction of one fifth sounds substantial. In absolute terms, however, tens of thousands of journeys still cross a sensitive area of limestone, maquis, coastal grassland and small bays.
Pressure does not come from exhaust alone. Dust, parking, soil compaction, noise and leaving designated routes all have a combined effect.
Certain areas are being closed gradually
In 2026, the management began closing individual areas to vehicle traffic. This is targeted management, not a confirmed blanket ban on cars across the entire cape.
The situation on site shows which access road is open on a given day. No complete published list of every newly closed area was available for this report.
A car costs €20 in high season
From 15 June to 15 September, a daily ticket for a car costs €20. The price is €8 for a motorcycle or moped, €50 for a camper van and €90 for a bus.
The management gives a ten per cent discount for online purchases. Prices before and after this high-season window are lower.
Access remains free on foot and by bicycle
Pedestrians and cyclists pay no admission. That does not automatically make a car-free visit easy: sun, dust, distance and limited shade all need to be included in the plan.
Water, head covering and a realistic route back matter more than the parking fee saved. Cyclists need to be especially alert on rough tracks and among vehicles.
What a smarter visit looks like
Early or late hours reduce the heat and often the crowds as well. Anyone arriving by car should use only designated roads and spaces and must not treat vegetation as parking.
Leaving the vehicle outside is even better when fitness and equipment make that realistic. Litter, fire and loud music burden the area regardless of the means of transport.
What the figures really tell us
The season has less vehicle traffic than 2025, but it is not quiet. The management is responding with higher high-season prices and gradual traffic restrictions.
The fair conclusion is neither alarmism nor an all-clear: Kamenjak remains accessible, but its appeal is precisely what makes consistent visitor management necessary.
