Two boats collided in the Barbatski Channel; no one was injured. A 32-year-old German is suspected of operating a vessel while intoxicated and then failing to stop. This is a police allegation, not a conviction.
What police reconstructed in the Barbatski Channel
According to the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Police Administration, a motorised watercraft and a wooden boat collided in the Barbatski Channel near Rab at about 8:05 pm on 26 August 2026. The wooden boat began taking on water and was grounded to secure it.
Both vessels suffered substantial damage. The official notice says no one was injured. The value of the damage had not been determined at the time of publication.
The suspicion concerns a 32-year-old man
Police suspect a 32-year-old German citizen of operating the motorised vessel and striking the wooden boat of a 42-year-old Croatian. They say he had an alcohol level of 1.01 grams per kilogram.
The measurement is an officially reported element of the investigation. Prosecutors and the court will decide whether and how it is assessed in criminal law together with the remaining evidence.
He allegedly failed to stop after the collision
The authority also alleges that the man neither stopped nor provided assistance after the collision. His own damaged vessel was reportedly towed later by another mariner.
This point in particular turns a property-damage case into a wider suspected offence. Until a final judicial decision, it too remains an allegation rather than a proven fact.
Providing assistance begins with your own safety
After a collision, crews must first establish whether anyone is injured or in the water, whether a boat is sinking and whether there is an immediate fire or fuel hazard. The position, number of people and nature of the emergency should be included in a prompt distress call.
Helping does not mean entering additional danger without a plan. Securing the engine, preparing lifesaving equipment, maintaining contact and following instructions from the rescue centre are often the first effective steps.
Why a damaged boat may be deliberately grounded
If a small boat is taking on water quickly, controlled grounding in shallow water can prevent it sinking completely. This protects people and makes recovery easier; possible fuel and environmental damage must also be monitored.
The measure says nothing about who caused the collision. Damage, traces, positions and statements are assessed separately.
Alcohol and evening light increase the risks
Alcohol can impair perception, reaction and judgement. At dusk, poorer visibility, hard-to-see navigation lights and the dark outline of small wooden boats add further hazards.
A crew should therefore choose a sober skipper before departure and organise lighting and the lookout in good time. A short return trip in familiar waters is not a risk-free exception.
The procedural position
Police report that the criminal investigation has been completed, a criminal complaint filed and the suspect handed over to the custody supervisor. No charging decision, judgment or statement from the man has been published.
Golden Beach therefore names no one and shows no purported accident vessels. The collision, damage, alcohol measurement and police suspicion can be substantiated — the question of guilt remains open.
